The Consumers Energy Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have a passion for their major and an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry. The Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application experience designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction.
This position within the Customer Research Department would involve interest in complex data science problems focused on the front end of the data science process. The Customer Research Department has large amounts of customer data used in single reports and studies, which come from an assortment of research activities ranging from longitudinal panel studies, focus groups, online and phone surveys, and other various projects. We are searching for someone to help connect these disparate data sets for the purposes of doing more holistic analyses of our entire research portfolio.
The Customer Research Data Science Intern will be initially responsible for creating a conceptual plan for an information management system to house all of the customer research data. Following the creation of this plan, the individual will begin executing on the deliverables in the plan.
Some tasks involved in this project will be:
Create a conceptual framework that maps out all the research done by the department and how its connected
Identify the best means of connecting all the data sets through unique identifiers
Build a prototype of a system that can house the data, perform stats on the data, and visualize the data
Additional responsibilities, projects, and assignments will be communicated throughout the internship experience.
In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out the business support function for Consumers Energy, Interns will have the opportunity to participate in a number of optional summer events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked event, the Intern Challenge.
Enrolled and actively pursuing a degree in data science, data analytics, information studies, social informatics, or other social science related field. The minimum GPA requirement for this internship position is 2.7.
The following skills and experiences may set you apart from others:
Technical skills in programming and statistics such as Python, SQL, R, Tableau, and SAP HANA or similar programming languages
Demonstrated creative/critical thinking skills
Social science research methods such as surveys, focus groups, interviews, content analysis, etc.
Understanding and critical thinking of complex systems
Intense curiosity and willingness to engage in hard problems that have no obvious answer
Ability and/or willingness to communicate complex issues and topics

Business Support Advisors and Consultants support the planning, business analysis, general management, budget preparations and analysis, negotiations, transactions, customer services and auditing of a wide variety of business functions and processes of specific operating and support areas throughout the company. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, departments and offices. Lead and/or assist with business analysis and support for the plans, reports, impacts, contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection, observations, and field investigations. Provide business analysis and support services with accuracy, on time and under budget. Use computer assisted applications software and equipment to prepare business analysis support documents. Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard procedures for projects. Become familiar with business and department and company plans and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. Assist in client contact and communication. Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public. Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material. Attend internal and external meetings. Provide business analysis and support services in a legal and ethical manner. Regular attendance is expected.
Hours and Travel
