Who are we:

The Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles is seeking candidates for a Customer Representative Associate II for the Operating Under the Influence/Habitual Offender Section of the Division of Driver License Services. This position interacts regularly over the telephone in handling complex and involved processes of Maine's operating under the influence, habitual offender and ignition interlock laws.

A typical day involves:

  • Answering a large volume of phone calls and providing technical advice to the general public, police officers and attorneys relating to license suspensions, revocations and restoration for OUI and habitual offenders and ignition interlock.

  • Assisting with the restoration processes to support the 13 branch offices. T

  • Reviewing police officer's alcohol offense reports to determine completeness and accuracy in order to expeditiously impose administrative alcohol suspensions in a timely manner as required by law.

  • Entering court convictions and court ordered suspensions for alcohol violations, entering of court information related to serious violations such as road rage and manslaughter.

  • Reviewing records to determine if a person's driving history is such that they must be deemed an habitual offender for serious and repeated violations and determine eligibility for a person to restore and drive under the conditions of Maine's ignition interlock program.

  • Collecting, validating, and reconciling revenue, in order to verify that the money collected for services reconciles with the amount of revenue to be deposited.

  • All new hires must successfully pass a National Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting.

To be successful, you will need:

  • Knowledge of programs and resources that have a compliance or eligibility component.

  • Knowledge of query and research techniques.

  • Ability to make intermediate mathematical calculations.

  • Ability to verify, code, compute, and/or reconcile data on standard documents.

  • Ability to track documents for follow-up action.

  • Ability to effectively resolve problems.

  • Ability to assist customers and providers with reporting, eligibility, and compliance requirements.

  • Ability to effectively present routine factual information to individuals/groups.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Training, education, or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates:
  • competency in applying a solid knowledge of the principles and practices of quality customer service to perform complex work in assisting the public with applications, fees, examinations, or social services that have an eligibility or compliance component; and
  • the ability to use independent decision-making on the appropriate processes to follow, information to process, and actions to take in accordance with standard procedures.
