CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN/POOL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the High School Plant Supervisor, perform custodial and maintenance duties at the swimming pool and in other custodial areas of the school; clean, service, maintain and operate the swimming pool and related equipment and facilities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Test water in swimming pool for temperature, chlorine content and pH factor; maintain water temperature at proper level by adjusting heating and related components; make necessary chemical adjustments to assure standards of purity and alkalinity; backwash pool filters according to established time lines; monitor and check gauges.
Clean bottoms and sides of pools using an underwater vacuum cleaner, hose, brush, skimmers and detergent.
Maintain cleanliness of pool decks, locker rooms, restrooms and surrounding areas; clean cafeteria auditoriums and other facilities; sweep, dust mop, scrub, mop wax and oil floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; clean up after ill students.
Clean, dust and polish furniture and woodwork; polish metal work.
Inspect, adjust, service and make minor repairs to heating and pumping equipment.
Prepare pools and other athletic facilities for special events; set up for water polo matches and swim meets; move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up bleachers for basketball, baseball and other events.
Prepare and maintain routine records related to assigned activities; order chemicals and related supplies according to established procedures.
Take off and put on pool cover; maintain the pool cover in good condition.
Reform minor non-technical repairs to building and fixtures, such as removing graffiti touch up painting, repairing ceiling tiles, replacing screws, replacing lights, and repairing tools used by custodians as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic cleaning methods, uses and applications of cleaning materials.
Chemicals and equipment used for pool maintenance.
Basic work practices related to custodial work.
Standard swimming pool safety and health precautions.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO:
Pool pumps, filters, chlorine and acid injection systems, pool heaters and related systems.
Learn to use cleaning and water purification materials, supplies and equipment.
Prepare swimming pools and other athletic facilities for daily use and special events.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Maintain routine records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of experience involving the care and cleaning of a swimming pool.
