Purpose: To keep buildings and grounds safe, neat, clean, and presentable at all times. An employee in this class performs routine manual work, cleaning and maintaining buildings. The eployee performs recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules. When problems arise, an employee in this class will refer them to the head custodian or supervisor. Supervision is direct with frequent inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions and standards of cleanliness.
Qualifications: Successful work experience
Physical Requirements: Depending on the job duties assigned for the day, the employees may perform lifting and pulling on a more frequent or less frequent basis. However, job duties may change throughout the week depending on the needs of the individual department or school at which the employee may be working. Bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and being on feet for extended periods of time may be frequent occurrence. Walking backwards will be a common requirement, especially when assisting in finishing floors. Lifting up to 50 pounds, more than 50 pounds with assistance, may be a common requirement. Climbing ladders up to 25 feet may be required on occasion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of cleaning methods, material and equipment
Willingness to learn skills in the use of custodial equipment used in routine cleaning
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Strip and refinish floors
Clean restroom facilities daily
Maintain appearance of grounds and parking areas
To assist any way deemed necessary by principal/assistant principal/head custodian/custodial manager Illustrative Examples of Work:
Scrubs, sweeps, mops, vacuums, finish and burnish floors in rooms and hallways
Dusts and arranges furniture
Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces
Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures, walls, and floors
Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, classrooms, and offices
Replaces light bulbs and florescent tubes
Empties wastebaskets and other trash receptacles
Locks and unlocks doors
Sorts and stores material for recycling program
Reports to head custodian or supervisor any damages or needed repairs
Picks up paper and other trash in school buildings or on school grounds
BUS DRIVER
Purpose: A bus driver is required to perform duties of transporting students in accordance with Federal, State and local rules and regulations and School Board Policy.
Qualifications:
Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), P & S endorsements (requirement is dependent on vehicle type)
Must be able to successfully complete a DOT medical examination
Must be required to successfully complete the physical standards testing set forth by the School Bus &Traffic Safety Section of the NC Division of Motor Vehicles and the School Systems Transportation Department as detailed in the Drivers Handbook
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to meet and maintain legal and physical requirements for North Carolina School Bus Certification and local rules
Ability to operate and maneuver a school bus with proficiency
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels (administrators, parents, students, and the general public)
Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations
Ability to earn the respect of students of all ages and act sensitively to their needs
Illustrative Examples of Work:
Drives a school bus safely and professionally
Maintains order and discipline of students assigned to the school bus in accordance with the School Board policies pertaining to the discipline and School Code of Conduct
Completes daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of school bus
Complies with Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations
Complies with School Board Policies and rules set forth by the school systems Transportation Department
Maintains logs and completes records
Participates in training and workshops
Performs other duties as directed by Supervisor or Transportation Directo
