Custodian

Job Description:

Summary: The School Custodian provides for a clean and efficient educational environment by performing routine tasks that ensure classrooms, bathrooms, hallways, walls, windows, rugs and sidewalks are ready for students and staff each day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards.

• Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds.

• Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.

• Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.

• Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).

• Advise the Executive Director on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.

• Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.

• Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm

• Undertake occasional custodial and janitorial tasks (shoveling snow from the sidewalk, cleaning up from major water leaks, lifting heavy items, moving chairs etc.)

• Initiate maintenance requests.

• Maintains inventory and request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.

• Maintains awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.

• Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.

• Ensure this job description accurately and correctly reflects the duties actually performed.

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Lower School Director, Upper School Director, Executive Director , or the Board.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequently required to bend, sit, move about, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights.

• Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

• Required to spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, and walking. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Employee is required to use properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

• Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone.

• Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.

Qualifications:

Education, Experience, and Specific Requirements:

• Any combination of education or experience sufficient to ensure successful work as a custodian.

• Ability to operate a vacuum for extended periods of time.

• Ability to work with chemicals.

• Ability to sweep and mop large areas thoroughly and efficiently.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
