PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Director of Maintenance and Custodial Services, the Custodian is primarily responsible for the day-to-day general cleaning duties in assigned building and associated tasks. This position is Monday through Friday 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs housekeeping functions of assigned building(s), areas, related duties, such as maintaining supplies, inventory reporting, inventory delivery and housekeeping equipment maintenance/repairs, as assigned or directed; follows outlined procedure for building cleaning, as directed.

  • Performs more extensive campus-wide housekeeping and cleaning activities during breaks and between semesters, such as wet extraction carpet shampooing, resilient tile flooring stripping/refinishing, etc. Other cleaning duties will require cleaning after on campus functions, as directed.

  • Provides coverage for absent custodians during off-hours as required.

  • Works cooperatively with other Facilities personnel to complete assigned work.

  • Performs additional cleaning duties as required by the electronic work order system, and reports to the supervisor once completed.

  • Observes and practices all safety procedures, such as safe use of chemicals, and proper use of safety equipment.

  • Adheres to and assists with environmental sustainability practices including recycling and waste disposal and reduction as well as use of environmentally friendly products; promotes ecological awareness on campus related to job function.

  • Attends regular safety meetings and special safety training sessions, as scheduled.

  • Assists with or performs functions related to set up or deconstruct of facility resources for special events; may require additional or variable work hours.

  • This position is considered an essential position.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Essential qualifications to include: ability to perform activities related to custodial services. Must have initiative, energy and willingness to learn new skills and take on new challenges. Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to be contacted on very short notice during off-hours is also necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General campus environment, conditioned or non-conditioned spaces, indoors and out of doors in all weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

This position involves walking, standing, bending, twisting, climbing and frequent carrying of heavy loads. Physical ability to lift and move heavy furniture and materials, and to negotiate stairs while doing so; and the physical ability to lift, carry and operate heavy cleaning and maintenance equipment is required. Physical ability to move snow with hand tools is also required.
