The schedule for the position is Wednesday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.; Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. (Monday and Tuesday off)

Custodians assigned to a day or irregular shift, which includes weekends and holidays, must have a valid driver's license. (Custodians assigned to these shifts prior to January 1, 2016, are exempt from this requirement.) Custodians assigned to other shifts are not required to have a valid driver's license; however, custodians who possess a valid driver's license may be asked to drive on a voluntary basis.

Employees assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel in accordance with the MIT's Policy on Emergency Closing or Early Release. During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisor, regardless of any public announcement that the Institute is closed. Employees who work a regular established work scheduled are not considered essential personnel.

MIT will conduct a background check (including checking criminal records) for finalists. For current MIT SEIU members, this background check will be done for finalists who are bidding for a promotion or for a voluntary transfer to another classification or seniority unit.


CUSTODIAN, Facilities-Custodial Services, to clean all assigned areas of the Institute, which may include classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, conference rooms, lounges, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, entryways, elevators, private offices, auditoriums, gymnasiums, and secure areas such as entrance and office doors. Duties will include emptying trash and recycling receptacles located inside buildings and placing trash and recycling in bins and dumpster; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms including the fixtures; restocking paper products and soap and removing used products; cleaning and polishing furniture; cleaning chalkboards, chalk trays, and erasers; cleaning event spaces before and after; dry and wet mopping and vacuuming floors; dusting and spot cleaning walls and doors in high and low areas; cleaning and disinfecting drinking fountains; cleaning interior windows and interior/exterior doorway windows; cleaning mirrors and other glass surfaces; and cleaning up water and debris due to leaks and flood with wet pickup vacuums.

The Custodian is responsible for all phases of cleaning within the University. Our staff has a daily presence in every building on Princeton's campus and provides cleaning and logistical support of campus events. We maintain student laundromats and campus fire extinguishers. Our team cares for over 10,000,000 square feet daily, and help setup and take down over 125 pieces of rental equipment each year. This position routinely interacts with members of the campus community and serves a vital role in providing excellent service. Open positions may include one of the following shifts.
