The City of Roanoke is seeking a Lead Custodian to perform essential duties in the care and cleaning of buildings, following ISSA 540 cleaning standards and established production goals. As a Lead Custodian, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors. You'll also handle the loading and unloading of drums of wax, preparing smaller quantities as needed for daily use.

In addition to your cleaning duties, you will:

  • Operate and transport cleaning and polishing equipment and materials.

  • Train and guide other employees, ensuring high-quality results.

  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets standards.

  • Distribute assignments to team members and step into a leadership role when the Supervisor is absent.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following.Other duties may be assigned.

  • Collects and disposes of refuse from interior and exterior of assigned buildings/areas; gathers items for recycling

  • Cleans and disinfects toilets, urinals and lavatories; refills soap, towel and tissue dispensers

  • Washes windows, walls, woodwork, bathroom fixtures and venetian blinds

  • Prepares quantities of cleaning and polishing materials appropriate for assigned tasks

  • Dust chairs, tables, shelves and other furniture or equipment

  • Sweeps, mops, waxes and uses buffers on floors

  • Shampoos carpets as needed

  • Reports repairs beyond capabilities of custodial workers to supervisor

  • Closes and locks buildings after late meetings

  • Loads and unloads cleaning and polishing equipment and materials to be transported by truck

  • Responds to special requests from departments

  • Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, materials and equipment

  • Orders and picks-up supplies

  • Signs-out equipment for use by others

  • Receives and relates assignments to others

  • Trains other employees and inspects work on completion

  • May be required to take classes or training to enhance job performance

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.However, may be asked to temporarily assume leadership role in the absence of Custodian Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); related experience and/or training in custodial or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid appropriate drivers permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

May be required to pass CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) background check due to required access to secured areas, depending on assigned area.
