Purpose

The job of Custodian II is done for the purpose/s of performing various grounds maintenance, custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining County Office building, facilities, grounds and equipment in a clean, orderly safe and secure condition; and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.

This job reports to the Assigned Administrator/Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Alters, paints, repairs, or constructs furniture and articles and structures (e.g. doors, tables, chairs, desks, walls, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items and maintaining a safe and attractive environment.

  • Assists with maintaining electrical and HVAC & R systems, equipment and fixtures (e.g. install and make routine repairs to electrical wiring, switches, outlets, plugs, fixtures and other electrical parts and accessories; test, maintain and replace filters, fans and belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe and operational working environment.

  • Attends trainings and safety meetings (e.g. use of pesticides, weed and grass spraying, etc.) for the purpose of developing professional trade and safety skills and learning current updated policies and procedures.

  • Cleans assigned facilities and grounds (e.g. sinks, fixtures, urinals, toilets, disinfects drinking fountains and restroom facilities, cafeterias, lounges, offices, hallways, kitchens, multipurpose rooms, etc.) for the purpose of preparing site for daily operations and maintaining a clean, safe and sanitary environment.

  • Maintains various records related to inspections, supply inventories, maintenance and assigned activities for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

  • Operates a variety of equipment (e.g. mowers, edgers, weed eaters, vacuums, mops,fork lifts, blowers, various hand and power tools, carpet cleaners, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining building and grounds in a neat, clean safe and sanitary condition.

  • Performs minor plumbing duties as assigned (e.g. inspect and repair leaks, obstructions and general system failures in faucets, drinking fountains, toilets, urinals, sinks and various other fixtures; adjust sprinkler settings and irrigation systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment and components are in proper working order.

  • Performs grounds maintenance activities in the beautification of grounds and landscaped areas as assigned (e.g. mow, edge, trim and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; hoe and pull weeds; rake leaves; prepare soil; plant, cultivate, prune and fertilize flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; fix broken sprinklers, timers and related items as needed;, etc.) for the purpose of providing an attractive environment.

  • Performs routine general maintenance and repairs as assigned (e.g. replace light bulbs and ballasts; assisting with repairing, adjusting and replacing electrical, plumbing, HVAC and various other parts, components and fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items and/or reporting major maintenance and repairs needs to appropriate staff.

  • Prepares site for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, picking up refuse, set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and after lunch periods, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free, minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.

  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, fire hazards, etc.) for the purpose of responding to emergency custodial, building maintenance and grounds maintenance requests as needed.

  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventory of key assignments and minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance including electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, etc.; operating a motor vehicle as necessary; and adhering to safety practices.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning; safety practices and procedures; basic grounds maintenance procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 80% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience Job related experience is required.

Education No specific education level is required. High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalency Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and one year job related experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

The stated education and experience requirements are the preferred minimum qualifications for this job. However, relevant experience to substitute for the education requirement and relevant education, certificates and/or licenses to substitute for the experience requirement may be allowed.
