Shift:Sunday - Thursday, 6:00PM - 2:30AM. Eligible for 5% shift differential

  •  The salary range listed above reflects the 2023-2024 Classified Employee Association pay rates. The salary range will be updated pending ratification of the successor Collective Bargaining Agreement.  

Basic Job Purpose/Function:

Responsible for cleanliness, upkeep, and minor maintenance of facilities and assigned areas, performing any combination of duties such as mopping, dusting, scrubbing, vacuuming, emptying trash, moving furniture, and setup and takedown of facilities for special events throughout the College district.  

Essential Duties:

  • Cleans offices, student activity areas and classrooms, and maintains cleanliness and services in designated lavatories.
  • Performs setups for special events and community affairs such as erecting staging, risers, bleachers and all other related equipment.
  • Assists and backs-up public safety in locking up and securing all doors, and maintains surveillance of campus.
  • Assembles and moves furniture as needed.
  • Cleans and maintains various floor surfaces including stripping, refinishing and buffing of hard floors and shampooing and extracting of carpets.
  • Operates heavy cleaning and scrubbing equipment.
  • Collects trash, disposable, and recyclable materials and delivers to refuse pick-up area.
  • Drives the various campus vehicles necessary to perform required assigned duties.
  • Removes and disposes of bio-hazardous waste, including site cleanup.
  • Assists security, grounds and maintenance as required.
  • Prioritizes and ensures completion of work orders.
  • Contributes to creating a positive work environment

Additional Duties:

  • Removes snow from stairway and walkway and applies applications of ice melt.
  • Responsible for power washing of walkways etc.
  • Removes graffiti inside and outside of building.
  • Repairs equipment.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience/Training: 

  • Minimum (1) year of experience as a custodian in an institutional or educational setting
  • Knowledge of custodial practices, procedures, and techniques related to items such as floor and carpet equipment and cleaning and polishing agents
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate at a level sufficient to perform the functions of the position
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis, occasionally above shoulder height 
  • Must be at least 19 years old 
  • Valid, current driver's license 
  • Ability to be insured by the college insurance carrier 
  • Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.

Additional Requirements:

Must obtain within 60 days of starting work depending upon availability of class:  

  • Blood Borne Pathogen Training
  • Emergency and Safety Procedures Training 
  • Gas Dispensing Training
  • HAZMAT Awareness Level Training
  • MHCC Defensive Driving Course

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a custodian in a community college setting

Working Conditions:

Work is performed with frequent exposure to hazardous materials, such as chemicals and bio-hazardous waste, weather, noise or potentially dangerous situations.   Frequent physical demands such as driving, walking and standing for long periods of time; moderate to excessive lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of heavy objects; and climbing, crawling and repetitive hand and wrist motions can be expected.

Salary:

Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement.  Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
