The Office of Custodial Services under the Department of Facility Services within the Frederick County Division of Parks & Recreation is committed to providing the highest level of facility management in an effort to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for all stakeholders who live, work, and conduct business in our Frederick County Government Facilities (Park and NON-Park Sites). Our In-House Custodial staff are required to go through extensive personal background check in order to be approved to work in our high-security facilities.


Non-exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday

  • Friday; 4:00 p.m.

  • 12:30 a.m.; full-benefits

This position is responsible in accordance with establish protocol for routine cleaning duties in Frederick County buildings as assigned. While performing this work, the Custodian must take all appropriate precautionary measures to ensure the environmental and sanitation safety of employees and visitors in the assigned buildings. While performing custodial services, the Custodian must take all appropriate precautionary measures to ensure the environmental and sanitation safety of employees and visitors in the assigned buildings. Applicants must be able to work and make decision independently. Supervision is received from his/her Lead Custodian, Custodial Services Supervisor, and/or the Facility Services Manager


  • Sweep, mop, scrub, stripand polish floors

  • Clean and maintain carpeted areas

  • Wash walls, windows, stairways and woodwork (which may require working from a ladder)

  • Dust and polish furniture and equipment

  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment

  • Clean, sanitize and deodorize restrooms and restock restroom supplies

  • Empty wastebaskets and remove trash inside the building and also around the outside of the building

  • Empty containers for paper and other materials set aside for the County recycling program, bring recyclables to the designated collection area and place in appropriate storage containers

  • As needed, operate a box truck or large van to transport supplies and equipment between County facilities

  • Report damage and potential hazards to the Lead Custodian in charge, Building Manager and/or Facility Services Manager

  • Perform custodial duties outside of assigned building(s) as needed

  • Close and secure doors, turn off lights, and exercise energy conservation measures as appropriate

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. In addition to the duties listed in the Essential Duties section, each employee in this classification may perform the following other duties. Any single position may not be assigned all duties listed above, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be assigned.

  • High school graduation or the equivalent

  • Possession of valid automobile operator's license with the ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County Employee Driving Permit


  • Knowledge of proper types of custodial equipment, cleaning agents, sanitizing chemicals and protective gear to use in all types of cleaning work, and the ability to use them safely

  • Knowledge of (or ability to learn) the use and operation of a high-speed buffer, standard buffer, vacuum cleaner, carpet extractor and other related equipment

  • Ability to understand and follow written and spoken (English) instructions

  • Ability effectively organize work, determine priorities and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision

  • Ability to develop, maintain, and promote cooperative, professional andeffective working relationships with co-workers and the general public


  • Previous custodial/janitorial work experience


  • While working in this position, the employee is constantly walking, moving or traversing, reaching and making repetitive motions; frequently climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, liftingupto50 pounds, pushing and pulling up to and over 40 pounds; occasionally driving; rarely sitting, crawling and liftingover 50 pounds

  • While working in this position, the employee is constantly working indoors, in dirty, dusty and noisy environments, near machinery, exposed to chemicals and fumes and required to wear protective equipment; frequently working in temperatures above 100 degrees, working in confined spaces and below ground level and potentially exposed to infectious diseases; occasionally working outdoors, walking on uneven ground, in temperatures below 32 degrees and working at heights


  • Ability to provide own transportation when needed

  • Available for weekend and holiday work hours, as needed

  • Available for a minimum of three mandatory Parks and Recreation events

  • Ability and availability to work irregular hours as needed

Essential Functions: The custodian maintains facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety to maximize and optimize facility use by students, staff, and visitors. Reporting directly to the Principal, Assistant Principal, Building Manager, or their designee the Custodian performs the following duties: Essential Custodial Duties: * Consistently perform daily custodial tasks in assigned area including: empty trash and recycle containers, remove visible dirt and debris from floors, wet mop all hard surface floors, rearrange furniture, and clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and drinking fountains. * Consistently perform periodic custodial tasks in assigned area including: low and high dusting, window cleaning, wiping down furniture and work surfaces, burnishing tile floors, and washing walls. * Perform seasonal tasks including: snow and ice removal, salt spreading, grass mowing, line trimming, mulching, raking, policing grounds for trash, and weeding. * Perform deep cleaning tasks including: refinishing tile floors, refinishing wood floors, high cleaning from a ladder or man lift, washing furniture, and deep cleaning carpet. * Perform as-needed custodial tasks including: graffiti removal, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, unclogging plumbing fixtures, painting, minor repairs on custodial equipment, and minor maintenance and repair of building furniture and equipment. * Consistently maintain assigned area at or above a level of cleanliness rated as "good" or higher on the Custodial Services Inspection. * Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities throughout the facility on an ongoing basis. * Lock and unlock assigned buildings and rooms. Secure facility when not in use: checking for unlocked doors / windows / gates, arming alarm, turning off lights, and report unauthorized occupants for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and/or potential liability. * Consistently reports promptly for work, utilizes time wisely, and maintains an acceptable pattern of attendance that must not adversely affect the overall productivity of the group, infringe on coworkers, or adversely impact the overall cleanliness of the facility. * Consistently responds positively to change while showing a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work. * Consistently display an attitude of teamwork / cooperation / professionalism along with an ability to follow both written and verbal directions with minimal follow up. * Attend training session or meeting to increase skill level or knowledge when required. * Work requires working varied shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
