Salary Range: $33.2450 - $38.880/hour

  • Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.

Scheduled Hours: Wednesday-Friday 10am

  • 6:30pm Saturday, and Sunday: 5:30am

  • 2pm

NATURE OF WORK

This is semi-skilled and lead custodian work involving cleaning and maintenance on interior and exterior areas of the facility. Work includes cleaning restrooms and windows, mopping, sweeping, trash removal, sweeping sidewalks, opening and securing the building, recycling, stocking, loading dock operations, deliveries, room set-ups and breakdowns, including AV equipment, light plumbing, painting, and carpentry, and small repair and maintenance of machines, and operating HVAC thermostats ensuring that the interior and exterior of the facility is presentable at all times. Employees may be assigned tasks of similar or higher level classifications to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. Work regularly exposes the employee to cleaning chemicals and dust and dirt. Safety equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirator, gloves, lumbar support, reflective vests, steel-toed shoes, and earplugs are worn.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Opens and closes the building/facility including opening and unlocking and locking interior and exterior doors at the beginning and end of each workday.

  • Removes recycling materials from all designated containers throughout the facility, indoors and outdoors.

  • Performs ice maintenance on ice surfaces, including resurfacing ice surfaces, edging, painting, installing logos, etc.

  • Makes minor repairs to the ice resurfacing machine, including changing of the cutting blade.

  • Cleans and maintains the interior and exterior of City buildings.

  • Operates a computerized building maintenance system to control the work environment.

  • Maintains an orderly atmosphere and caution users about conduct and misuse of public property, updating the supervisor of any unsafe conditions or needed repairs.

  • Informs management of the need for major repairs regarding lighting, heating, and physical structure.

  • Responds to emergency and other calls for service via telephone calls.

  • Removes snow and debris, including litter from adjacent areas surrounding the center, sidewalks and property walkways keeping the premises in an orderly condition.

  • Drives a City vehicle to and from vendors or other city buildings to pick up supplies and materials; loads and unloads vehicles.

  • Makes minor electric repairs to light fixtures, switches, and sockets.

  • Makes minor repairs or assists in unclogging toilets; assists a plumber on installation or repair projects; cleans and maintains all plumbing fixtures.

  • Maintains building which may include, but is not limited to, minor and routine painting, washing walls and cleaning window treatments, washing windows, dusting/polishing furniture, and minor repairs of equipment.

  • Moves furniture in and out of rooms; sets up tables, chairs, Audio Visual (AV), coffee set-ups and other equipment and supplies for meetings; install, assemble and disassemble holiday decorations; conduct an annual inventory of furniture and office equipment.

  • Cleans and maintains the interior and exterior of facility including restrooms, gymnasium washrooms, lunch and break-rooms, and meeting rooms. Cleans and mops floors. Cleans glass replaces light bulbs, fills soap dispensers, toilet tissue and paper towel holders. Cleans vents, checks fire extinguishers and perform related work.

  • Orders and maintains inventory of janitorial supplies.

  • Troubleshoots and sets up small electrical and mechanical equipment such as audio-visual equipment (public address system, CD players).

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Must possess a high school diploma, GED or higher and two (2) or more years of progressively responsible work experience in building and custodial operations or trades.

Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions required when using cleaning equipment and chemicals.

  • Ability to operate hand and power tools such as buffing machines and vacuums in a safe and effective manner.

  • Ability to read, understand and apply instructions for the safe application of chemicals and/or cleaning supplies.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

  • Ability to greet the public in a courteous manner.

  • Knowledge of cleaning operations, procedures, and practices.

  • Knowledge of personal computers and their applications.

  • Some knowledge of supervisory methods and practices.

  • Ability to assign, plan, and schedule the work of others.

  • Ability to operate an ice resurfacing machine.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with others.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Ability to work in confined spaces and to work safely around operating equipment.

Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects

Ability to work outdoors, occasionally, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including, but not limited to, lifting heavy objects, climbing, sitting or standing for long periods of time; bend, crawl, identify or distinguish colors, recognize depth of objects, focus on small or distant objects, talk and hear.

Frequently exposed to dangerous equipment, loud noises, vibrations, dust, dirt and odors

Ability to lift chairs and tables and deliver heavy merchandise to departments

SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under the general direction/supervision of the Operations Supervisor or designee. The employee receives daily projects and assignments which will vary from season to season and day to day. Assignments can be either verbal, written or through email, with the employee determining proper procedure and work methods and is responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communication, meetings, and feedback from supervisors and other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standards.

PUBLIC CONTACT:

The employee has regular contact with the general public as well as other City employees to answer general questions, set up meeting rooms and describe general maintenance issues. The employee may need to respond to questions and complaints and provide general direction to the public; the employee has regular contact with other City employees in order to share information and complete work assignments and programming initiatives.
