The Custodial Services Manager will provide daily support, direction, and training to custodial staff and student employees; plan and schedule staff assignments; plan, direct and coordinate activities related to the custodial operation; approve timecards; and hire, direct, and evaluate staff.

What will I do in this position?

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide daily support, direction, training to custodial staff employees and student workers, plan and schedule staff assignments, plan, direct and coordinate activities related to the custodial operation, hire direct and evaluate staff

  • Assist in developing and managing budget, reports, policies and procedures regarding custodial functions, assist in developing/maintaining short/long term maintenance projects, comply with all safety procedures and OSHA standards, monitor/administer building inspections to assure safety and cleanliness, order and distribute equipment and supplies.

  • Coordinate training programs, review problems/complaints in a timely manner and determine correct action and other duties as needed.

  • Assist with the development and management of custodial services budget and procurement activities and the development of statistical reports.

  • Implement operational policies and procedures.

  • Work in conjunction with the Maintenance and Grounds to augment various staffing levels due to vacation, sick leave, etc. or when functions require additional personnel.

  • Comply with all safety procedures encountered in the maintenance and operation of the custodial services operation.

  • Coordinate the Hazardous Waste (which includes chemical, electronic, and medical waste) collection and disposal.

  • Screen, interview and provide recommendations for employment of prospective employees.

  • Develop, plan and execute training activities, performance evaluations, corrective procedures and recommendations for promotions, demotions, retention or terminations of employees.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Position is considered "essential personnel" and is required to participate in various committees and provide administrative and management support and various other duties, as required, during and outside normal working hours including institution closures, and duties related to emergencies, and scheduled and unscheduled events.

  • Maintain related departmental inventories for equipment, vehicles, and materials.

  • Resolve issues and questions when Associate Vice President is absence.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What will it take to succeed in this position?

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in custodial operations, facilities emphasis or related field

  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience with the ability to supervise large group of employees

  • Previous experience with budgets preferred

  • Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern's mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional leadership skills with ability to effective lead individuals and teams

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and outside suppliers

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Must have extensive knowledge of housekeeping methods, materials, and equipment

  • Must have thorough knowledge of security and safety measures

  • Ability to manage departmental budget

  • Ability to implement operating policies and best practices

  • Basic computer proficiency

  • Ability to secure and maintain valid driver's license

  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and respond to emergencies and service calls during non-scheduled working hours as needed

  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
