Supervises and assists in training a custodial crew by assigning duties and instructing new workers in the proper use of equipment and materials, to achieve a high level of cleanliness in University buildings. May inform the Supervisor on personnel items.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

1.Determines the proper distribution of employees and materials for a particular day's cleaning problems by inspecting assigned building(s) to ensure an adequate cleaning job is done.

2.Gives general supervision by assigning tasks and reviewing work of one to five full-time and/or five to twenty part-time custodians and custodial workers which may be in one shift or two (four hour shifts) depending on the particular needs of the building in question.

3.Assist in training new crew members in the proper use of equipment and materials by demonstration and suggestion to ensure proper application of chemicals and minimum breakdown of equipment.

4.Ensures that work standards are being adhered to by inspecting assigned work areas and completing inspection reports for review by supervisor.

5.Ensures that assigned work area is secured by inspecting for locked doors in accordance with regulations.

6.Maintains time sheets for individual crew members by filling in hours to ensures proper credits for pay purposes.

7.Maintains adequate stock of supplies by ordering as necessary within a pre-established budget guideline.

8.Maintains positive public relations with departments by responding to specific cleaning requests.

9.Reports maintenance and emergency problems to supervisor or police respectively.



  1. Performs all duties of custodians as required to ensure accomplishment of assigned goals.

  2. May back up supervisor by assisting him/her directly or acting for him/her during any absence.

Problem Solving

This position is given the authority to shift employees under his/her supervision in order to accomplish the daily workload.

Problems that may be encountered in this position include trying to keep assigned area clean with less than 100% staffing of a crew; and trying to motivate employees to do a thorough job.

Comments

The incumbent is a working crew leader and must be willing and able to perform all duties normally expected of lower level custodians. However, his/her supervision responsibilities should take precedence as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of previous custodial experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); the ability to lift 50 lbs.; the ability to climb a minimum of six feet on an authorized stepladder or scaffolding; and demonstrated oral and written communication skills required. Previous supervisory experience would be helpful.
