SUMMARY

The Cultural Orientation Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the Cultural Orientation program for recently-arrived refugees. The program is designed to support the successful resettlement of refugees by helping refugees understand the rights and responsibilities that they have in the U.S.; building the knowledge of refugee participants about their new communities; and ensuring that refugees have the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to achieve self-sufficiency. Cultural orientation is delivered in accordance with timelines and requirements of federal, state, and other funding sources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach cultural orientation curriculum to newly-arriving refugees. Topics will include: the role of the resettlement agency, the rights and responsibilities of refugee status, the importance of learning English and different supports available to help refugees learn English, public assistance benefits, an overview of U.S. laws, employment and strategies to obtain and retain employment, health and wellness, budgeting and personal finance, housing, hygiene, safety, cultural adjustment, education, and transportation. Many students will be limited English speakers.

  • Assist in the development and ongoing modification of the cultural orientation curriculum to ensure it remains relevant to the changing needs of clients and any changes to the welcoming community.

  • Manage relationships with key community partners to ensure that curriculum is accurate and relevant, and to ensure that the curriculum includes guest speakers and other experts. Partners include, but are not limited to, Immigration Legal Services staff, local police departments, school districts, and public transportation.

  • Conduct pre- and post-program assessment with refugee participants. Share findings from the post-program assessment with each refugee's team in a timely manner and track outcomes for reporting purposes.

  • Respond to any requests for additional information about specific refugee clients from team members.

  • Coordinate interpretation services for all cultural orientation sessions.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements to ensure that all such requirements are met by the cultural orientation program

  • Complete narrative reports and assist with proposal writing as needed.

  • Participates in developing long-term planning and policies for the program.

  • Keeps supervisors informed of trends, issues, and developments in providing services.

  • Maintains case notes documenting all contact with clients and other parties involved with cases and adheres to strict confidentiality surrounding client information and records.

  • Coordinates services with other key staff to assure comprehensive services for the refugee.

  • Attends and participate in staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

  • Abides by high quality of standards of case management and adheres to service delivery expectations of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM) and local state agencies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Adult education or teaching experience preferred.

  • Cross cultural sensitivity and knowledge with the ability and desire to work with people of other cultures, some of whom will speak limited English.

  • Ability to perform general mathematical functions and to explain to clients with limited English language abilities.

  • Functional fluency in one or more foreign languages preferred.

  • Broad knowledge of practices, principles, and methods employed in the resettlement of refugees, including a working knowledge and understanding of US Immigration laws and regulations.

  • Written communication skills, ability to write reports and to make presentations.

  • Detail-oriented, extensive documentation skills, organized and able to work in a multi-task environment.

  • Skilled at crisis management, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiation, collaboration, and mediation.

  • Attention to punctuality for work, appointments and report dates.

  • Ability to self-start and work well in a team setting as well as individually.

  • Computer skills in Word, Excel, and the use of email and other applications.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide proof of auto liability insurance at the level of $100,000/300,000/100,000.

  • Demonstration of commitment to the mission, values and vision of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Up to four interns and four volunteers.
