The Substance Use Treatment Community Support Specialist (CSS), working in both center-based and community settings, will engage members in treatment through outreach, counseling and coaching, to help members establish and work toward recovery goals.

The Substance Use CSS will also provide assertive outreach to those who have disengaged in care, as well as community members who are not in treatment but are at risk for substance use disorders. In addition, the Substance Use Treatment CSS will provide follow-up and aftercare for members who have completed treatment.


  • Engage members in recovery and rehabilitative services through harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and motivational enhancement techniques.

  • Work with members to develop a Continuing Recovery Plan that addresses their comprehensive needs.

  • Link members to recovery support services, including facilitating the use of community-based mutual aid resources.

  • Assist members in connecting with an external provider for continued Medication Assisted Treatment.

  • Facilitate alumni support groups.

  • Routinely meet with members in their community environments.

  • Provide support to members with collateral sources, including other agencies.

  • Collaborate with members to engage family and other social supports in recovery planning.

  • Accompany members to meetings, appointments, etc., in the community, using public transportation.

  • Provide overdose prevention education and support.


  • Perform and participate in crisis intervention when necessary.

  • Provide accurate and timely information to the supervisor on all topics and issues related to the operation of the agency and the well-being of members.

  • May be required to work flexible schedules and be available to work on weekends or evenings as required.



  • Master's Degree is preferred; Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent experience and licensure.


  • Substance use and mental health recovery counseling and assessment experience.

  • Experience working with persons diagnosed with substance use and mental health needs preferred.

  • Ability to work as an effective team player.

  • Ability to document services provided in an Electronic Health Record in a timely manner

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience within a hospital or medical setting preferred.

  • Knowledge of medical terms and ability to communicate with medical staff is strongly pref


  • Professional staff providing clinical services shall have at least one of the following:

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) + 2 year's experience

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Assumes the leadership role within the team. Models and monitors evidence-based practices and recovery principles. * As a "player-coach," actively leads and oversees the activities of team staff members providing outreach, case management, social, vocational, education, physical well-being, and residential services and programming and other services and support provided by the treatment team. * Ensures that most services are provided in the member's natural setting. * Meets required productivity targets and completes all documentation within assigned time frames. Monitors and coaches staff on meeting productivity measures. * Monitors member attendance and occupancy on the team so that case assignments, transitions, and closures are handled effectively and efficiently. * Reviews all required documentation. Maintains the quality, validity and confidentiality of individual case records. * Participates in the hiring sequence of the agency, and makes recommendations on the hiring or termination of team staff. Conducts annual evaluations for all team staff. * Follows agency standards regarding clinical supervision. * Works flexible schedule including work on weekends or evenings as required. May be required to be on-call. EDUCATION Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and have a Bachelor's OR Master's Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related field plus substance use experience. Preferred: LPC, LSW, LCPC, LCSW.
