Under the direction of the registered nurse, the purpose of this position is to protect and promote health, prevent illness and injury, and alleviate suffering through nursing diagnosis and treatment. Under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting through oversight of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide holistic care and advocate for patients and families served.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification

Required:

CA RN license or Nurse Interim Permit

BLS

Education

Preferred: BSN, MSN, or currently enrolled in RN-BSN program.

Experience

Required: Less than six months experience as a RN.

Department Specific Requirements

Must have desire and intent to practice in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), Cardiovascular Intermediate Critical Care Unit (CVICCU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Intermediate Critical Care Unit (ICCU), or Nursing Critical Care Float Pool.

  • Staff will be enrolled in this 12-week RN transition program designed for the licensed RN or RN Interim Permittee who has considered a career in Critical Care and is seeking a supportive, structured transition into this specialty area.

  • Upon completion of the transition program the participant should be able to demonstrate core competencies essential for the delivery of safe and effective care to critically ill patients.

  • Upon successful completion of the program, the nurse management group will assess the skill level of each intern, consider each intern's preference, assess unit needs, and make assignments based on these assessments.

  • Successful completion of the program is determined by performing on-going competencies throughout the internship that include: evaluations, simulations, bedside practice and educator and/or preceptor feedback.

  • At the end of the didactic education, the participant must demonstrate competency in Head-to-Toe assessment and tests that include Arrhythmia and Critical Care Core One.

If at any time the participant does not meet the learning expectations and/or pass these tests, they will not continue in the CCNI program.

The nurse uses the results of quality of care/performance improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice:

Collects clinical data to monitor quality and effectiveness of nursing care.

Identifies aspects of care that are important for quality monitoring and formulates recommendations to improve nursing practice or patient/resident outcomes.

Participates on interdisciplinary teams that evaluate clinical practice or health services relating to patient/resident care.

Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of how the RN participates in QI studies: involved in task force or committee. Implements suggestions for improving outcomes per unit study results.

Independently identifies problematic areas and recommends problem solving. Shares findings of studies, audits with others. Seeks improvement independently.

Collaborates and communicates with the patient/resident, family, and other health care providers:

Formulates the plan of care and involves. patient/residents in decisions related to care and the delivery services.

Makes referrals, including provisions for continuity of care, as needed.

Additional

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.

Pay Range

$46.44 -$69.66
