Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the Paralegal- Criminal Division assists in the daily processing of criminal cases received from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. This position is covered under the Prosecuting Attorney's Personnel Handbook. This is an employee-at-will position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for processing criminal cases for trial preparation, including, but not limited to legal documents, data entry, and correspondence.

  • Completes a daily court calendar for Allen County Superior and Circuit Courts, obtains jury panels, and issues discovery to defense attorneys.

  • Prepares subpoenas and cancels subpoenas when trials are completed, dismissed, or continued.

  • Enters revocation petitions and prepares files for court.

  • Requests criminal history documentation including, but not limited to national, state, and local criminal histories, booking photos, arrest records, juvenile criminal histories, and Bureau of Motor Vehicle records.

  • Schedules appointments for defense attorneys to meet with deputy prosecutors, depositions, and pretrial conferences.

  • Assists victims with restitution information, no contact orders, subpoenas, and court dates.

  • Communicates with law enforcement individuals at the federal, state, and local level, the general public, and victims and witnesses in criminal cases.

  • Performs a variety of office related activities in support of Department functions and responsibilities, including back-up of co-workers and front desk duties that involve dealing directly with the public regarding criminal complaints. Processes daily mail.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED with an Associates' Degree in Criminal Justice or law related field preferred

  • One year of experience in the criminal justice system, law enforcement, court operations, corrections, or similar experience

  • Knowledge of legal requirements through courts and other related county departments to assist the public, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and other agencies

  • Knowledge of standard law enforcement operating policies and procedures and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality

  • Ability to work with professionals, non-professionals, co-workers, victims, victim advocates, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, witnesses, defendants and government agencies

  • Ability to utilize multi-tasking skills while ensuring quality of work and deadlines are met

  • Ability to perform a variety of office related support activities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

The Paralegal- Criminal Division has the ability to make practical applications of procedures when performing trial preparation activities. Work consists of relatively standardized tasks when processing criminal cases for trial preparation.

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Paralegal- Criminal Division performs a variety of tasks when completing a daily court calendar for Allen County Superior and Circuit Courts, obtaining jury panels, and issuing discovery to defense attorneys. Errors in work are revealed through adverse effects.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

The Paralegal- Criminal Division maintains frequent contact with other county employees, law enforcement agencies, federal and state agencies, attorneys, victims, victim advocates, defendants, and the general public regarding criminal cases.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Paralegal- Criminal Division works in a standard office environment with the ability to move around freely with frequent sitting and requires some lifting of up to twenty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching overhead, and kneeling. The Paralegal- Criminal Division requires very frequent typing, attention to detail, monitoring equipment, detailed inspection, and transcription/proofreading.
