The North Carolina Justice Academy has two campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg and provides all levels of training for Law Enforcement Officers, Detention Officers, and Telecommunicators. Topics include anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy collaborates with the Criminal Justice and Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commissions to ensure training is developed to fit the needs of the officers.

This position is located at the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, N.C.

This position is primarily responsible for the conversion of training into an online delivery format utilizing Storyline, Camtasia, and other development tools. This position works with a team of developers primarily with the Mandatory In-service Training program.

This position also works with the Audio Visual Production Unit as they coordinate projects from concept to completion. Prior experience with specified software is not required.

The person filling this position will be assigned to one of four instructional work teams and will be required to perform a portion of all three of the following organizational duties.

First, the person will be responsible for coordinating and instructing advanced and specialized criminal justice training curricula (as differentiated from entry-level training) using an Instructional System Design model of analysis, design, development, delivery and evaluation phases.

Second, the person will be responsible for providing technical assistance in assigned content areas upon request from criminal justice personnel regarding operational policies and procedures.

Third, the person will be responsible for developing advanced and specialized criminal justice training materials that will include curricula, multimedia, and other audiovisual materials.

This position may/will additionally be responsible for providing training or acting as supplemental trainer for other subject areas offered by the North Carolina Justice Academy, including but not limited to the following topic areas;

  • Specialized Instructor Certifications are required for Commission-mandated courses which include: Physical Fitness, SC/AT, Firearms, Driving, Speed Measuring Instruments (SMI), Telecommunicator Certification Course, Detention Officer Certification Course, Instructor Training and Hazardous Materials.

The salary grade for this position is NC15. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.

 Please detail ALL work history including non-state service experience.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $51,616 to $66,000. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

  • The person must have very strong verbal communication abilities. This applies to both the administrative and training environments.

  • The person must have solid written communication skills. The person must be able to concisely and correctly prepare administrative reports, memoranda, letters, etc. The person must also be able to write and edit training materials, hypermedia and distance learning media, publications.

  • The person must also have the ability to market programs in the specialized content area for which they are responsible. The person must have considerable knowledge of general criminal justice practices and must have and maintain the current expertise of a specific content area at the advanced and specialized level. The person must have considerable knowledge of current educational and training methodologies, including multimedia and distance learning technologies, and can analyze and interpret evaluation and other research data.

  • The person will operate in environments without daily on-site supervision where he/she will be expected to possess strong interpersonal communication skills, be self-assured and able to organize and prioritize work, establish specific goals in response to broad policy direction, solve problems independently and collectively within a work team, be self-directed and self-motivated without daily direction and supervision, conceptualize ways to transfer theory into practical application, exhibit high moral character and behavior, including discretion in matters of highly confidential information.

Master's degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which assigned;

or Bachelor s degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which instruction is to be conducted;

or an equivalent combination of education arid experience.  

Management preferences: Management prefers current NC General Instructor Certification; current Telecommunicator Certification; Experience with developing and delivering training programs for Telecommunicators.

Credit for foreign degrees will only be given if verification of degree certification is attached to your application.  Transcripts for foreign degrees have to be evaluated by an organization like World Education Services to determine US equivalency.

Veterans Preference: Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a copy of their DD-214 or discharge orders.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.  If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
