WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This position is responsible for:

  • Receiving all incoming evidence submissions, mail, package, and CODIS samples for the laboratory

  • Data entry: entering case information into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and entering CODIS samples into the DNA Database

  •  Maintaining evidence chain of custody to include regular inventories

  • Ensuring and maintaining evidence integrity (proper packaging, seals, and storage)

  • Evidence logistics within the laboratory

  • Returning evidence to law enforcement agencies after testing is completed

  • Providing exceptional customer service in person, in writing, and over the telephone

  • Other administrative tasks as assigned

This position is stationed at the State Crime Lab in Anchorage. It involves physical work (standing, lifting, reaching, pushing/pulling, walking) and office work (data entry, typing). This position serves as a support role for the Forensic Scientists

CRIMINAL JUSTICE TECHNICIAN 1

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

CRIMINAL JUSTICE TECHNICIAN 2

Successful completion of training under a formally established Criminal Justice Technician 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska;

OR

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

AT TIME OF INTERVIEW

At time of interview applicants must provide;

  • A list of three (3) professional references including daytime telephone number and email address; at least two (2) of these must be from a current or former supervisor.   Professional is defined as a supervisor or an individual who has direct knowledge of your work performance.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate's credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.

FIREARMS

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position.

A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.

If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.

SPECIAL NOTE

Must possess a current, valid Alaska Driver's license at time of employment.

Job duties require lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds over rough or uneven surfaces. As a condition of employment, the Department of Public Safety will require a physical examination to determine the ability to meet the physical demands of the job.

A background investigation, including a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, will be made.

Positions may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in bunkhouses, vessels, or tents.

ALASKA PUBLIC SAFETY INFORMATION NETWORK

This position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, a security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application or security clearance.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
