Position Title: Criminal Justice Teacher

Pay Grade: Per Certified Instructional Scale Period of Employment: 10 months

Description Approved/ Revised: 04/2024 FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrators and K-12 CTE Director

General Responsibilities: Provides classroom instruction for the criminal justice program courses and ensures all students acquire the course level objectives set forth in the Virginia Department of Education Criminal Justice curriculum.

Essential Duties:

  • Examines the function, organization, and history of agencies and laws that comprise the criminal justice system.

  • Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines and requirements of the criminal justice CTE program and Manassas City Public Schools.

  • Instructs the students on safety, equipment use, problem solving and completion of projects.

  • Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.

  • Maintains equipment, materials, and facilities to protect students and faculty.

  • Maintains and upholds school and division policies and procedures.

  • Maintains records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations.

  • Attends and participates in faculty and department meetings, and professional development.

  • Creates a learning environment that integrates best practices for student success including authentic WBL-Service learning, industry recognized credentialing exam, student organization events, and engagement in profession specific activities.

  • Participates in community and school sponsored events to promote the school's CTE programs and to enhance community relationships.

  • Attends district and state events/competitions with participating students and serves on program committees.

  • Stays abreast of new and emerging trends in criminal justice to maintain relevancy in curriculum.

  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, the community, family support professionals, and staff.

  • An understanding of formative/summative assessment and the ability to assist administrators and teachers in analyzing and interpreting data as it pertains to setting improvement goals and targets.

  • Knowledge of the investigative procedure.

  • Well versed in local, state, and federal laws and ordinances.

  • Able to discuss the procedures for physical arrests, release on summons, traffic citations, verbal warnings.

  • Able to teach interview and interrogation techniques.

  • Knowledge of legal searches of buildings, prisoners, and suspects.

  • Understanding of crime scene Investigation to include evidence collection, photography, sketching, and notes.

  • Knowledge of constitutional amendments that relate to the criminal justice field.

  • Able to discuss morals, values, ethics, and civil liability in the criminal justice field.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Technical Professional teaching license with a Law Enforcement endorsement.

  • Must possess or obtain an Emergency Telecommunicator Instructor Certification with the International Association of Emergency Dispatchers through the VDOE program within the first year of employment.

  • Previous employment as a sworn or non-sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement official who left that position in good standing.

  • Previous teaching experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physically capable of effectively using and operating various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
