Criminal Analyst

The class is responsible for researching, collecting, collating, evaluating and analyzing intelligence information and crime data for the purposes of strategic and tactical analysis and dissemination of reports to the Law Enforcement Analyst Supervisor. The class is works under general supervision in accordance with set procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• Requires a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Science, Liberal Arts, Public Administration or related field. Minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience in research methods and statistical analysis and gathering, computing, analyzing, and maintaining statistics.

• A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.

• Must successfully complete a Police Division background investigation to include a polygraph examination prior to an offer of employment or promotion.

• Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

• 28CFR23 and VCIN/NCIC certifications may be obtained while working in the Unit.

Additional Requirements

• Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.

• This position may require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends on an as needed basis.

• The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations, at the direction of the City Manager or Chief of Police, or in support of priority investigations, such as missing persons or search for suspects related to crimes involving high value persons. These situations may require long hours and unusual schedules.

• Provide credible courtroom testimony when necessary. Must be able to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance.  A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination.
