Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a public community college serving over 4,800 people annually in credit courses and credit-free workshops. Job Description:

This course is designed to instruct future educators how to teach using creative experiences in art, drama and music.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Teaches course(s) in specific discipline. Responsible for instructional preparation and assessment of student performance. Provides assistance to students by appointment. Attends a limited number of faculty meetings.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires Master's degree or a Master's degree in progress in a related field.

  • Collegiate teaching experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful community college teaching experience

  • Commitment to the mission of the community college

  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting domestic diversity and/or global multiculturalism in the curriculum where appropriate.

ABOUT THE POSITION: This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the Science Department. We seek candidates with an expertise in computer programming, a passion for teaching and helping students, excellent organizational skills, the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, and the motivation to creatively update and expand GCC's computer science program. THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: Greenfield Community College's Science Department mission encompasses teaching STEM majors and liberal arts students, inspiring students to explore STEM and ensuring their ability to advance into STEM transfer degrees and careers. Where larger schools have separate departments in discrete scientific fields, GCC coordinates science and engineering needs under one umbrella, allowing for creative interdisciplinary work that benefits students and faculty. The department also recognizes that science does not exist in a vacuum; critical and ethical thinking about science and technology in the 21st century is a crucial part of what we teach, and developing our students' abilities to become leaders in their communities. The department strives to respond to emerging fields and opportunities for students by revising curriculum and creating innovative programming. The computer science program is a key part of that innovative process. Job Description: GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) faculty member will teach a range of courses related to computer science and engineering; generate CSE program pathways; clarify emerging opportunities for careers, workforce, and economic development; and help the GCC development office to identify and pursue funding opportunities. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: * Evaluate, improve, and teach at least five of the following core courses in computer science or computer engineering (with the understanding that new courses could be designed and substituted for one/more of these): programming principles and concepts, Java programming, C++ programming, Python programming, discrete math, data structures, and calculus-based probability and statistics; * Develop and teach new courses to respond to emerging demands in educational and workforce needs (e.g. gaming, cybersecurity, database management, etc.); interdisciplinary collaboration in course design, development, and instruction is encouraged; * Advise students interested in computer-based careers and respond to inquiries/prospective students; * Mentor students in computer-focused internships and/or directed studies; * Coordinate the computer science program and collaborate with the engineering program coordinator to support computer engineering students; * Communicate with community partners, such as high schools, technical schools, 4-year colleges, and employers. * Identify and create responsive credentials, such as mini-certificates, certificates, and degrees; * Collaborate with the GCC Information Technology department to inform program development, as a source of adjunct faculty teaching as available, and to develop infrastructure needs; * Connect with the regional activities and opportunities for computer-based careers; * Work actively with GCC grants office and foundation to identify and obtain funding; * Collaborate closely with Workforce Development at GCC and the Hampshire/Franklin Regional Employment board to identify and address needs of these diverse populations of learners; and * Participate in departmental, division, committee, and college-wide meetings. Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field; if Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, then Master's degree in any field; Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field with at least three years of practical experience in industry may be considered if the candidate can demonstrate equivalent Master's level knowledge and skills; * At least three years of combined teaching, training, and/or industry experience with a minimum of one year full-time equivalent teaching experience (at any level); * Program development/project management experience; * Excellent writing and communication skills as demonstrated through conference participation, workshop instruction, successful grant proposals, and/or publications; * Demonstrated ability to synthesize diverse ideas, be detail oriented, and clear; and * Demonstrated effectiveness working in a collaborative, team setting. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * College teaching experience, especially community college; * Knowledge of computer careers locally and regionally, and demonstrated ability to learn more about them; * Demonstrated experience with curriculum development; * Experience in creating budgets and writing/managing grants; and * Experience in academic or career advising.
