The Marketing & Communications (M&C) Division leads and coordinates strategic marketing and communications for CMU, raising the institution's global visibility and deepening its reputation as one of the world's great universities. We provide leadership, partnership, and coordination for communicators across campus, collaborating with other offices, colleges, schools, and departments. Services include expertise in websites, creative design, videos and photographs, news packages, media relations, social media, leadership communications and more.

We are seeking a Creative Director to join the leadership team with M&C. Reporting to the creative Senior Director, you will be responsible for inspiring and leading the creative vision, execution and production of print and digital materials developed by the creative team in collaboration with the central M&C teams and university-wide units. You will work with the brand blueprint to generate creative communications that grow CMU's brand awareness and reputation while helping university units think strategically and produce materials that meet their marketing objectives. With a strong background in audience targeting and storytelling, you will be expected to develop compelling, outstanding, strategic and effective solutions that set the creative standard for university marketing material.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Leading all aspects of and producing multiple creative projects from concept to production, while managing, encouraging, and mentoring a team of designers, writers, and digital media producers.

  • Providing creative oversight for the photographers, multimedia producers and web designers, as well as creative freelancers (designers, writers, interns, agency partners).

  • Offering strategic input on the over-arching branding direction. Define design/image criteria of the university's official identity system while crafting publications, websites, videos and other creative elements.

  • Leading creative writing and editing assignments, to include writing as needed.

  • Prioritizing and assigning work requests, as well as evaluating talents and skill sets of creative staff both existing and new hires.

  • Meeting with supervisor and team to discuss issues and progress on projects, and taking on additional duties as requested.

  • Making presentations to pitch creative solutions.

  • Strong conceptual storytelling with proven ability to concept, write and direct creative for full marketing campaigns and specific marketing materials, including video, print collateral, and digital experiences.

  • Exceptional client service while helping others think strategically; aptitude to apply reasoning and problem-solving skills to find suitable solutions.

  • Proven ability to concept, storyboard, and direct complex video; ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.

You should be able and willing to work outside normal business hours as evening and weekend hours may be required, as well as ability to travel on, off, and to other campus locations as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing/advertising, writing/journalism, commercial design, or related studies required; Master's preferred.

  • Minimum eight years of experience in an advertising/marketing/branding field, and supervising a creative team required; experience in higher-education desired.

  • Extensive experience in both producing and directing design, copy, and artwork with freelance writers, photographers, and video production experts; experience in paper and printing techniques necessary to meet high quality and high degree of production variability in print and ad special arenas.

  • Knowledge of standard methodologies for high quality web design, site architecture and user experience a plus.

In this role, you will serve as the marketing lead for the School's annual season (approximately 25 productions) utilizing a multimedia and grassroots marketing strategy to develop audiences within the Pittsburgh community and beyond.
