Crain's Chicago Business is seeking an experienced political reporter to tackle one of its prime coverage areas power and influence in a competitive market for a vitally interested business readership.

This reporter will work closely with political columnist Greg Hinz and the editors to map out Crain's strategy for covering government, politics and the local civic and business leaders who shape policy at the city, county, state and regional level.

The reporter in this position will primarily be responsible for covering the intersection of politics and business, following the key players both elected and unelected whose influence and interests clash and converge in a city entering a new phase of its civic life.

The successful candidate will have a digital-first mentality and be ready to break news while also being capable of digging deep to deliver well-researched investigative stories and thoughtful analysis. Beat-reporting chops and a familiarity with the Chicago and Illinois political scene are a must. Five years of political reporting experience is desired.

Basic Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of reporting experience

  • Recent experience working within a major Chicago daily newsroom covering Chicago/Illinois politics

  • Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise, and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and clarity

  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and must be curious and able to generate enterprise ideas

  • Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for trend stories

  • Ability to work with editors to develop story ideas and deliver them on time while keeping in close touch with editors about developments on the beat

  • Ability to digest large amounts of information, "see the story," and execute with urgency as needed

  • Must demonstrate an ability to mine legislation and regulatory filings for incisive stories

  • Minimum of three recent clips demonstrating political coverage of Chicago/Illinois

  • Candidates most likely to excel in this position will be ones who are self-starters, motivated by excellence, competitive, curious, and also enjoy being part of a team

  • Web publishing, multimedia and social media experience

  • Comfort with taking on, holding accountable and sometimes challenging some of the most powerful people in Chicago

VIEW JOBS 10/11/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-09T00:00 Crain's Chicago Business is seeking a savvy event manager to be part of the marketing and events team. The event manager will be responsible for executing 25+ business events over the calendar year inclusive of planning and coordination of event logistics, marketing and promotion and sponsorship management. The event manager will be expected to develop strategic initiatives, goals and solutions for events and at times with team collaboration, across all channels (marketing, audience, events, sales, edit, custom). This role will require a 40+ hour work week with the ability to work onsite at Crain's downtown office and offsite event locations during standard and non-standard work hours. During event days, work hours may include a required start time of 5:00am weekdays and/or late afternoon or evening set-ups. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Work with leadership to develop, concept and finalize event programs, timelines and budgets for year-round events * Oversee and facilitate all aspects of event planning and execution of 25+ face-to-face events with attendee counts ranging anywhere between 20-800 business executives; and Crain's Leadership Academy programming * Responsible for all logistical planning and on-site execution including venue sourcing and RFPs, vendor management, event registration/attendee support, on-site staffing and post event reporting * Serve as primary point of contact for all stakeholders including leadership, account execs, event contacts, sponsors, guest speakers, etc. * Write, produce and deploy all pre- event marketing/promotion materials to drive attendance and sponsorships, includes promotion timeline and strategy and working with designers to create all sell sheets, print ads, digital ads, e-blasts, social posts, event information emails for attendees and post event surveys (track response and analyze feedback) * Design event materials including sales collateral, event program presentations and sponsor post-event recaps * Set up and manage attendee registration site and audience q&a platform * Responsible for strategizing and facilitating outreach to meet attendee count and revenue goals (may include sales calls to drive attendee revenue) * Seek, develop and maintain strong working relationships with event partners and vendors and lead negotiations for completive pricing * Manage event and Academy contact databases * Plan and execute invite-only events for senior Crain executives and key clients * Work with designers and vendors on creative asset production and art direction * Execute deliverables for any strategic event trade partnerships, cross-promotions and relationships * Work with the Email Marketing Specialist to create and deploy email campaigns and develop target lists for event promos * Manage event budget and track expenses * Additional duties as assigned BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Degree in Event management, hospitality, PR, marketing, communications or a related field * 3 or more years of related experiences, B2B event planning experience is a plus * Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (outlook, excel, powerpoint, word, publisher) * Excellent writing, analytical, and copyediting skills COMPETENCIES: * Self-confident decision maker * Ability to shift gears smoothly and maintain momentum on multiple projects at once * Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and time management * Strong writing skills and effective communication * Ability and willingness to collaborate and work in a cross-team environment * Exercises good judgement; creative, innovative thinker and problem-solver * Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs PREFERENCES: * Knowledge of Cheetah Digital, Cvent, Formsite, social media platforms * Experience with Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver) preferred * Publishing or media experience a plus For more than 30 years, the sole mission of Crain's Chicago Business has been to provide local business news and information to Chicago's most influential executives.
