Job Description:

The Craft Supervisor oversees the daily work performed in the Craft Supervisor's assigned Shop. The Craft Supervisor is responsible for assigning and monitoring the completion of work, as well as providing technical assistance, and generally managing the workforce within the Shop. The Craft Supervisor is expected to identify and ensure that appropriate actions are taken to support the timely and effective completion of assigned tasks. This includes ensuring that company policies and practices are followed in all phases of project performance and personnel-related functions, including but not limited to the hiring and supervision of union employees, employee performance management, terminations, promotions and demotions. The Craft Supervisor also is responsible for ensuring that employees comply with Company policies and procedures, and the requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The Craft Supervisor reports directly to the Craft Manager.

Some of the key Craft Supervisor duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that the Shop is pursuing Company goals for Safety, Quality and Productivity.

  • Developing and/or reviewing project schedules and budgets during the planning phase.

  • Allocating personnel and resources to efficiently support all contracts (including shift work).

  • Overseeing and monitoring schedule performance, including review of ongoing and upcoming projects, investigation of late activities, project supervision, and the development of practical solutions.

  • Monitoring and evaluating project budget performance, including review of ongoing and upcoming projects, development of productivity enhancements and investigation of over-budget items.

  • Monitoring productivity across all shifts, including the amount and type of work assigned as well as the quality and quantity of work accomplished.

  • Performing personnel related functions including, but not limited to, the supervision of employees, performance management, workforce reductions, promotions, demotions and discipline.

  • Ensuring that employees understand and adhere to Company policies.

  • Training and motivating employees in the areas of technical knowledge, safety, environmental and communication.

  • Ensuring that requirements of the labor agreement are satisfied.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

The required skills and qualifications vary depending on the Shop and Supervisor position, but generally include:

  • High school or equivalent degree.

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in the trade.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in the relevant trade.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, supervise, and direct the work of other employees in the relevant trade or industry.

  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in making operations and personnel decisions.

  • Proficient computer skills required including experience with Microsoft Office programs and similar software.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

The Craft Supervisor position is a non-bargaining position. Please note that each specific Craft Supervisor position may have additional or different skills, responsibilities, and qualifications based on the shop in which the Craft Supervisor works. The Company also may, in its discretion, modify the skills, responsibilities, and qualifications for Craft Supervisors at any time.

Must be able to obtain government access badge and capable of working any shift.

Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet. * ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description) With minimum supervision, the Health & Safety (HS) Inspector should be able to provide Health and Safety guidance and support to the workforce. Ensures that the Company maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations. * POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training) * Typically has a High School diploma or GED; with typical 4years of directly related experience or AS Degree in related EHS field. * Must have some working knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health (OSHA) 1915 and 1910. * A minimum of three years of experience performing the duties of a Safety Inspector. * A minimum of three years of full-time experience directly related to safety enforcement and related duties comparable to a Safety Inspector in industrial or commercial plants and/or construction sites. * Continuing education in approved Health and Safety related courses towards a Professional Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent. * Must have, or be able to complete and pass, courses including; 1) OSHA 3095, 2) OSHA 5410, and 3) Shipyard Competent Person. If a candidate does not pass the Red/Green Sensitive Ishihara Test, the candidate shall take the Farnsworth D-15 Test. If the individual does not pass the Farnsworth D-15 Test, the inspector must be evaluated by a licensed medical practitioner to provide the necessary data to determine the inspector's color perception. Individuals certified after an evaluation by a licensed medical practitioner shall only be certified to perform inspection work that is within the inspector's color perception capability. * The examinations required by above shall be administered by, or under the cognizant of, a licensed medical practitioner and documented on the vision test record. * WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Reports to the EHS Manager and HS Supervisor. Maintains internal contacts with Production, Repair, Maintenance, Medical, and Emergency Response personnel. * PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES * Conducts shipboard safety walk thru inspections for on and off site vessels as required daily. * Safety walks of the facility grounds to ensure compliance of environmental and safety hazards. * Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ear plug dispensing stations. * Maintains MSDS/SDS sheets for contract availabilities in progress. * Maintains lab analysis of paint and installation samples per assigned availabilities * Conduct breathing air surveillances. * Inspect scaffolding systems daily prior to commencement of work. * Conduct Grade D breathing air test. * Conduct Industrial lift Equipment spot checks for licenses and ODCL (Operator Daily Check List) completion. * Helps create and edit new work instructions, procedures or training materials and participates in training events (leading and attending). * ACCOUNTABILITY With minimum supervision, HS Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are followed. They help implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents and injuries. Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced. Carrying out daily site inspections to check that policies and procedures are being properly implemented. * UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to enter confined spaces, work at heights and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require entering confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 90% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 90% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. May be required to travel for company business.
