Service Description: CPO Building Blocks is an AmeriCorps program with the dual purpose of providing an educational benefit to low-income children and providing intensive professional development for low-income adults serving as AmeriCorps members.
The educational component is a home visiting program designed to build parents' capacity to help their children develop early literacy skills. AmeriCorps members model a technique called interactive shared book reading during monthly book sessions and deliver new, hardcover books to participating children. In the empowerment component, CPO recruits and trains residents of low-income neighborhoods, most of whom live in subsidized housing and are unemployed and/or lack post-secondary credentials, to deliver the literacy intervention.
During the 1-year service term, CPO provides members with individual coaching and group facilitation around work readiness, self-sufficiency and self-efficacy. Member Duties: AmeriCorps Members will conduct the following activities:
Outreach and engagement: Engage CPO residents about early childhood learning in multiple settings (community, homes/porches, events, phone). Home-based early reading: Conduct sessions with parents and their children at least two times a month using evidence-based curriculum.
Data collection and documentation: Document all contacts and programmatic activities and collect data from children and parents. Enter data into electronic system.
Resource linkage: Link CPO residents to other resources and programs in CPO and the community. Be an ambassador for CPO in the community.
