The First Judicial District of the Alaska Court System (ACS) seeks a highly dependable individual to be a Courtroom Judicial Assistant (salary range 12).  This is a traveling position based in either Juneau or Ketchikan and will be required to work Saturdays and Sundays, along with three weekdays.

The selected applicant will produce electronic recordings, written and typed log note indexes of court hearings, and process court documents.

The Position

The Courtroom JA will maintain all aspects of court filings which include: accept and process filings, set up case files, and enter data into the case management system for criminal, civil, probate, minor offense, delinquency and CINA files; calendar dates for hearings and notify all parties, as well as prepare judgments, distribute orders, and close cases.

If selected, you will serve as Courtroom JA for judicial officers conducting hearings on Saturday and Sunday, including holidays.  You will set up the courtroom, call court to order, operate and maintain recording equipment and ensure an accurate record is made of the proceedings. Other tasks will include: keep the courtroom stocked with forms; create complete and thorough log notes of the proceedings; prepare and distribute paperwork; mark, secure and keep a log of exhibits; administer oaths to jurors, witnesses, bailiffs, interpreters, and others.

Finally, the Courtroom JA will travel within First District court locations as necessary to perform similar duties as detailed above.

Work Hours

Full-time court employees are scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week.  The hours for this position are Saturday and Sunday, plus three other week days, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND one year of office clerical experience AND the ability to keyboard at least 40 words per minute (net).

Substitution:

Additional office clerical work experience will substitute for the high school diploma or GED certificate on a month-for-month basis.

Completion of 36 semester credit hours or 48 quarter credit hours of coursework from an accredited college will substitute for the year of required office clerical experience.

Completion of an appropriate vocational training course of study such as legal secretary, paralegal, or office skills will substitute for the required office clerical experience on a month-for-month basis.

KEYBOARDING CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

Attach a recent keyboarding certification (dated within one year) to your application that verifies your keyboarding speed of 40 wpm or higher (net). WORK HISTORY

EDUCATION

If post-secondary education is required to meet the Minimum Qualifications, you must fill in the Education and Training section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the number of credit hours earned in the Degree Obtained field. Copies of academic transcripts will be required at time of interview.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be required to meet the Minimum Qualifications as outlined above. Unfortunately, we cannot always interview all applicants. If your application is considered "not qualified," you will be sent a notice within two weeks after the closing date for this recruitment. If you believe your application was improperly disqualified, you may appeal this decision to the Human Resources Director at 820 West 4th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501-2005 within five workdays from the date the notice is mailed to you. Qualified applications will be forwarded to the hiring supervisor.
