The Courthouse Police Sergeant is a commissioned law enforcement position. Police Sergeants are line level supervisors who perform the duties of a commissioned police officer, and in addition guide, direct, and mentor their subordinates to achieve the goals of the Department.

The Sergeant works under the direction of the Police Lieutenant, and exercises full supervision over employees engaged in the daily operation of a shift. The Sergeant assumes control of all operations and services in the absence of the Chief of Police and the Police Lieutenant. Other duties include supervisory duties, providing safety and security services for the courts, employees, and citizens who occupy or use the Courthouse, Juvenile Courthouse, other County facilities, and protection of the Sedgwick County Courthouse and other designated physical properties.

Security measures used include the use of Magnetometers, x-ray machines, hand scanning, physical pat downs, foot patrols, and vehicle patrols. The Sergeant is authorized by law to engage in the prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution or the incarceration of persons for violations of law; has statutory powers of arrest for warrants, commitments, and probable cause cases. They are authorized by law to serve process.

Provides safety and security functions to preserve the public peace and ensures that dangerous items are kept out of the Courthouses

  • Provides lobby screening to ensure unauthorized people, weapons and other dangerous/illegal objects/substances do not enter the building

  • Safely and efficiently greets and directs the public through the metal detectors and arranges x-ray screening of their personal property, hand scanning and physical hand searches of both persons and property, if needed

  • Answer the telephone in a professional manner while working in the control center and gather necessary caller information and dispatch officers as needed

Conducts Roving Patrols to deter illegal activities and confrontations, by a visual uniformed presence, and provides assistance to citizens

  • Produces and maintains the daily officer's schedule and arranges for adequate coverage to allow sufficient officers to make proactive patrols to deter illegal activities

  • Provide thorough checks of the entire Courthouse complex by exterior and interior patrols

  • Issue parking citations as warranted

  • Respond quickly to alarms and calls for assistance, notifying the Control Center they are en-route to the call

  • Detain suspects and conduct arrests as required

Provides safety and security services for the Courthouses, District Courts, Protection from Stalking Docket, Protection from Abuse Docket, Domestic Law Dockets, tax foreclosure sales, the Small Claims Court, primary/general elections, and tax appraisal hearings as needed

  • Standby to protect a Judge, Jury, and courtroom occupants from possible harm

  • Ensure a respectful attitude from participants in the courtroom by enforcement of District Court rules requiring the removal of hats, requiring proper attire and ensuring cell phones are turned off

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent.

Five years of law enforcement experience. A sound history of stable job responsibility. Customer Service Skills.

Kansas Certified Law Enforcement Officer; Free of Brady/Giglio issues. Maintain 40 hours of annual training. Maintain proficiency in annual firearms qualification. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.

Ten years of law enforcement experience. Five years of law enforcement supervisor experience.
