Under general direction, performs work of routine difficulty in maintaining the safety and security of the Courts and court services personnel.

  • Screens court visitors; patrols buildings, facilities and grounds; provides a visible, armed security presence; operates metal detectors, hand-wands and x-ray screening machines to detect concealed weapons and hazardous objects; inspects identification badges to control employee bypass entrances and prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas; interacts with difficult and/or belligerent persons to diffuse situations peacefully; carries and safely controls court-approved and issued firearms and/or other defensive weapons.

  • Monitors closed circuit TV and various fire and security alarm systems; provides security escort services as requested; responds to emergencies and implements emergency procedures when appropriate and as directed; responds to medical emergencies to summon assistance and monitor situation.

  • Officer in Charge at post.

  • Training officer.

  • Identifies potential security/safety concerns and notifies the Court Security Manager; prepares and submits reports on security incidents.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: 

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible relevant experience in court security, law enforcement, military, private security, or closely related field.

Additional Requirements:

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must successfully complete the Court Security Officer Academy within ninety (90) days of hire. Must successfully complete the Armed Court Security Officer Academy. Must comply with the Arizona Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees and complete annual training as required by the Arizona Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of court security, methods, and techniques for providing safety and security and the provisions of providing emergency services.

  • Safe and lawful handling and use of firearms and defensive weapons.

  • Pertinent laws and regulations.

  • Defensive tactics and application of non-lethal weapons for controlling volatile situations.

  • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.

  • Clerical office practices and procedures.

  • Research techniques and report writing.

  • Current Microsoft Office software.

  • Filing and recordkeeping.

Skill in:

  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.

  • Organization and adherence to detail.

Ability to:

  • Prioritize, schedule, and organize work to meet established deadlines.

  • Keep court users safe from internal or external harm.

  • Work under pressure in a highly dynamic work environment with changing demands and priorities.

  • Make good observations, recall facts, and maintain a security awareness of the courthouse facilities.

  • Evaluate and respond to security problems in a swift, effective manner and with appropriate actions.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.

  • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.

  • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.

  • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.

  • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

Work Environment:

The work environment is associated with an office or courtroom with occasional work outdoors. The work area is adequately lighted, heated or cooled and ventilated. This is a highly public position where contact with the public may be in stressful situations.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Performs work that requires good physical strength and condition to apply restraining techniques, defensive tactics, react to physical confrontations and emergency situations, may lift and/or carry people, supplies, equipment and/or other heavy, bulky items. May be exposed to potential physical harm, bloodborne pathogens, and/or physical violence; may be required to physically restrain persons, and effectively deal with stressful and potentially life-threatening emergency situations.
