This class is assigned to provide security to county, circuit, and juvenile courts for the 1st Judicial Circuit in Escambia County. May provide field training to new employees and may provide lead direction to civilian employees.

NOTE: This position is an exclusively OFF-ROAD position. Court Security Deputies will not be eligible for certain allowances that are available to on-road deputies.

FOR OUT-OF-STATE CERTIFIED OR MILITARY MEMBERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT

If you are certified in Law Enforcement in another state, a federal agency, or military, or if you have more than four years' break in Law Enforcement certification, you may be exempted from attending the full basic recruit academy and may qualify for an Out-of-State Equivalency. To determine if you meet the requirements please contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement assessment center.Maintains security in and around the courts; ensures the safety and security of court personnel and the public; escorts jurors during court breaks.

Conducts and documents security inspections prior to court sessions.

Answers calls and complaints within the judicial center; may conduct investigations regarding these complaints.

Assists individuals and the general public entering the judicial center.

Patrols inside the building and the perimeters of the judicial centers to preserve public order and tranquility and to prevent and/or discover the commission of crimes against person or property.

Makes arrests and testifies in the prosecution of law violators on the judicial center premises; prepares detailed and accurate reports to be used in follow-up investigations and court actions.

Protects crime scenes, gathers, and preserves evidence within the judicial centers; directs and coordinates activities on-site until relieved by a supervisor.

Serves warrants, capias, court orders, and other legal processes; arrests persons wanted on warrants or court orders.

Thoroughly searches confinement areas in a systematic manner, locating and seizing any contraband, and preserving any evidence found in accordance with agency policy; searches prisoners as required or directed; transfers prisoners from holding areas into courtrooms; guards prisoners during court appearances, maintaining security and control of the prisoner, ensuring that no prisoners or other persons are injured and no escapes or disturbances occur.

Sequesters juries overnight when necessary.

Assists in moving inmates and detainees.

Collects fingerprints and DNA samples of individuals convicted of crimes.

May perform work outside of the confines of the judicial centers in emergency situations as deemed necessary by the Sheriff or his designee.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):

High School Diploma (G.E.D.), AND completion of a basic training program for Law Enforcement approved by the CJSTC in the state of Florida, AND passed the Florida state officer certification examination

Physical Agility Test requirements:

You will be required to take and pass a Physical Agility Test (P.A.T.) at the beginning of the pre-employment process in order to proceed. The P.A.T. is conducted in a time-dependent, continuous flow manner. The P.A.T. determines the participants level of physical condition and aerobic capacity. This course must be completed in under 6 minutes and 4 seconds (6:04). The tasks associated with this test measure specific physical abilities which include:

  • exiting a vehicle/opening a trunk
  • running 220 yards
  • completing an obstacle course
  • dragging a 150-pound dummy
  • completing the obstacle course a second time
  • running 220 yards
  • dry firing a weapon six (6) time with each hand
  • placing items in and closing trunk/entering a vehicle

Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):

CJSTC certification

FDLE certification

Valid driver's license

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Basic investigative techniques and procedures.

Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes.

Rules of civil process and related statutes.

CPR.

Firearms operations.

Recordkeeping procedures.

Skills (position requirements at entry):

Charging suspects with violations.

Interviewing witnesses and suspects.

Tracking chain of custody related to evidence.

Maintaining records and logs.

Serving civil processes.

Utilizing firearms.

Preparing and maintaining activity reports, logs, and related documentation.

Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work:

Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
