The Product Manager is responsible for creating the roadmap for tools or products for which the individual is responsible. The product manager works with a variety of academic, business, and internal stakeholders to identify strategic priorities and enhancement requests for the products. They then work with IT and the development team to prioritize requests based on strategic direction and team capacity. The product manager is responsible for developing and implementing change management plans for new features. They also provide direction to internal power user teams, which provide first tier training and communication to users of the tools. The product manager is the primary point of contact for stakeholders and as such is responsible for communication, advocacy, and relationship management. The product manager should be connected to the market place to ensure the suite of tools continues to be a sustainable investment that meets SEI's evolving needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Across the suite of apps:

  • Create a product vision that spans 2-3 years and creates strategic capabilities that align to SEI's long-term goals, and promotes value to the suite user (productivity, efficiency, visibility, etc.).

  • Represent and evaluate connections across apps and new 3rd party tools within the suite.

  • Manage the flow of features across apps to ensure appropriate timing and dependencies.

  • Work with internal and external leaders, staff and other stakeholders to develop and communicate a complete online product, design, content, and user experience strategy and roadmap.

  • Form relationships with stakeholders across SEI to champion products and ensure continued funding and support.

  • Maintain an external view regarding emerging technologies to be used within the suite, needs of higher ed, and how to grow the suite with the organization.

  • Early evaluation/participation for any future SEI acquisitions.

  • Lead the build vs. buy discussion and decision making for future capabilities.

  • Strategic oversight for integrations with broad organizational applications.

  • Develop change management and support strategy for tools and lead power user teams - providing guidance and direction to for tier one staff support and training.

  • Communicate regularly with academic, SEI and course development leadership on the status of the roadmap and feature rollout.

For each individual app:

  • Annual roadmap development representing all stakeholders with quarterly adjustments based on new information.

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the technical, user experience, business, and competitive landscape for an assigned online product.

  • Strategies & philosophies regarding things like assessment strategy and course materials.

  • Regular attendance at release planning, sprint closure meetings/demos, sprint, and story mapping planning meetings.

  • Regular, ongoing touchbases with scrum master and business analysts for decisions, status updates, and escalations.

  • Change management, communication, and management to/of user base and stakeholders.

  • Someone to define the what, not the how.

  • Prioritize new features, enhancements, defects & technical needs on an ongoing basis to ensure strategic goals are achieved and product holistically meets the needs of multiple stakeholders.

  • Lead and facilitate process review/changes and training.

  • Operationalize the vision for the suite as it pertains to the individual application.

Job Skills:

  • Ability to understand and translate complex technical concepts into understandable, digestible content for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to assess value, and prioritize stories, epics and themes to ensure work focuses on those with maximum value that are aligned with product strategy.

  • Ability to thoroughly understand complex business and technical issues; plan, prioritize, and organize effectively.

  • Experience with grooming product backlogs and coordinating/prioritizing conflicting requirements.

  • Ability to manage all aspects of a successful product throughout its lifecycle.

  • Strong negotiation skills with aptitude to manage controversial situations as well as influence.

  • Superior verbal & written communication and storytelling skills.

  • Ability to design and implement change management and communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, experience in dealing with multiple and diverse internal stakeholders and interacting with business and technology partners.

  • Strong execution skills, work with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Comfort in an ever-changing and sometimes ambiguous, work environment.

  • Serve as "voice of the customer" working across multiple stakeholders to convey needs an priority rationale.

  • Preferred but not required: A basic understanding of software development and lifecycles.

Work Experience:

  • 3-5 years product manager experience or work in similar capacity.

  • 3-5 years experience on Agile team

  • Background in change management or communication


  • BS degree required (or equivalent experience in IT).
  • MBA degree preferred

  • Must be able to travel 15% of time.

  • Must be able to lift 10lbs.

  • Typical office setting.

  • Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.

  • Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.

  • Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant

  • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.

  • Strong mental acuity
