Position Summary

Basic Function

Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling, assist students in understanding and managing psychological issues affecting their college success.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct clinical interviews with student clients in order to evaluate psychological/emotional conditions.

  • Make appropriate treatment planning decisions as to level of care needed, type and longevity of treatment, and whether treatment is best received on campus or in the community.

  • Respond to student mental health emergencies as needed.

  • Treat psychological or interpersonal difficulties utilizing various treatment modalities.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of clinical interventions.

  • Present psychoeducational information as needed by the community or as requested by the Director.

  • Provide outreach to the College community.

  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and parents.

  • Supervise and consult with graduate student trainees as needed.

  • Participate in College infrastructure as needed (committees, staff meetings, etc).

  • Provide back-up on-call crisis service by telephone on an occasional basis.

  • Adhere to all professional ethical guidelines and Guilford College policies.

  • Maintain relevant licensure.

  • Provide support to the College and to the Counseling Center as needed and requested by the Director of Counseling or the Dean of Student Affairs.

  • Complete other tasks as assigned by Director of Counseling.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree from an accredited program in counseling, social work, psychology, or closely related field

  • Eligibility for independent licensure within 6 months of hire

  • Working knowledge of developmental theory

  • Excellent assessment skills

  • Familiarity with various treatment modalities

  • Suicide assessment skills

  • Awareness of multicultural issues

Preferred Qualifications:

Independent licensure preferred. Dual licensure as an LCAS strongly preferred. Experience with college student population or young adult population preferred. Experience working with clients who are diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, religion, ability, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation preferred. Knowledge of brief/short-term treatment modalities, group therapy, psychiatric medications, substance use, and crisis intervention preferred. Experience or interest in media and marketing preferred. Experience with clinical data collection and analysis preferred.
