Department: Student Life Purpose of Department:

The Wellness Center provides superior and confidential physical and mental health care related to specific illnesses and health concerns. This includes triage, assessment, treatment, and referrals.

The Wellness Center encourages and educates students to take action to improve their overall physical and mental health in a caring and professional environment.

Summary of Position:

The Counselor, reporting to the Director of Counseling, provides direct service delivery to traditional undergraduate students (TUG) students related to mental health, clinical services, crisis intervention and consultation, and education. The Counselor also supports outreach, training, and consultation to the campus community. The Counselor is a licensed professional who functions independently and with discretion.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Support the University community by evaluating the safety of students and the campus by providing psychological crisis assessments and appropriate interventions.

● Build trust with students to facilitate effectiveness.

● Handle heavy volume of walk-in traffic and scheduled appointments.

● Plan and execute individual and group therapy/counseling sessions.

● Support the University's mission by playing a vital role in students' retention, satisfaction, and success.

● Guide students in the development of skills and strategies to manage their presenting problems.

● Refer students as appropriate for psychological testing.

● Act as a student advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.

● Provide support for students by collaborating with other offices such as Residence Life and Housing, Student Involvement, Athletics, Academic Advising, and Public Safety.

● Evaluate client physical or mental condition based on review of student information including counseling intake and screenings and information shared by faculty or staff regarding the student.

● Meet with University officials (VP for Student Life, Residence Life and Housing staff, Public Safety staff) to exchange necessary information for managing crisis situations.

● Collaborate with faculty in regard to managing and supporting disruptive students.

● Consult with Student Life to determine appropriate sanctions related to student conduct.

● Refer students or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary.

● Gather information about community mental health needs and resources to ensure current and effective options are available to students.

● Develop faculty and staff awareness activities.

● Provide training to Resident Assistants, Peer Mentors, and others with direct student contact and oversight.

● Provide assistance during the interview and hiring process of graduate counseling interns.

● Represent WPU at trainings and seminars, bringing back knowledge to share and present to the Wellness Center and Student Life staff.

● Provide occasional on-call psychological support for students and consultation for staff outside of regular office hours.

● Develop wellness initiatives and partner with other campus departments for implementation.

● Participate on the CARE Committee (Compassion, Advocacy, Resources & Education) for students of concern.

● Maintain confidentiality of records relating to students' treatment.

● Represent the Counseling Center at University Admissions events such as Peace Preview and Admitted Students Day.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May supervise work study students.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Possession of or ability to obtain State of NC license as a mental health professional within one year of date of hire.

Work has deadlines and high volume. May require day and overnight travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Education, or other related field

● Two years of clinical experience

● Experience in time-limited modalities.

● Experience or training in at least two of the following: anxiety, depression, substance abuse, group counseling, multicultural counseling, disability, eating disorders.

● Ability to effectively interact with a culturally diverse population.

● Excellent analytical, interpersonal, customer service, leadership, and communication skills

● Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations

● Ability to maintain confidentiality.

● Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a culturally diverse environment.

● Excellent attention to detail

● Competent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and database reporting software.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Education, Social Work or related field

● Experience in an academic setting.
