Academic Center Instructional Aide - Burns Flat Campus

Full time: 10 months annually (August through May).

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Assist with academic center activities to facilitate student success in career technology programs, goal attainment and workplace and job readiness skills

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services who is responsible for supervision and evaluation.

Academic Center Coordinator-Instructor serves as a Team Leader for this position and other staff in the Academic Center department. Evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the board's policy on performance appraisal review for support personnel.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or two years of college preferred.

One year of experience in a classroom or tutoring with high school-aged students or older preferred. Experience with career and technology education preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Paraprofessional certification preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate student grades, figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Familiarity with general classroom management practices and teaching methods.

Ability to maintain a position of authority amongst students. Ability to deal effectively with the public and school officials. Good working knowledge of the operating practices of career and technology education.

Knowledge of employability skills and soft skills. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, ability to establish good rapport with department staff, students, vendors, and others is essential. Intermediate computer skills.

Ability to operate basic functions of computer-aided instruction systems. Must be able to use other classroom equipment, including smart board, as well as scanner, copy machine, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.Provide basic academic support and instruction, individual or group, to students for reading, math, and communication skills related to their technical training as needed.

2.Assist with development of written individual plans for each AC student based on assessment of achievement, aptitude, and interest.

3.Assist with enhancement opportunities for students in acquiring advanced, applied, and higher order math, science and thinking skills as needed.

4.Assist with job readiness instruction for students as needed.

5.Assist with opportunities for students in test preparation areas such as: GED, occupational licensure, certification exam, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, etc.

6.Assist with organization and scheduling of activities with program instructors in order to best supplement program curriculum.

7.Assist with monitoring progress of all AC students based on their individual plans, computer reports and pre and post testing.

8.Monitor students encountering problems in the AC effectively and assist in resolving problems and/or refer them to proper staff/agency.

9.Provide instructional modifications including oral testing and oral curriculum instruction.



  1. Assist in the classroom by making assignments, reports, and worksheets.

  2. Operate all learning equipment in the AC.

  3. Assist with maintenance of student records and documentation of students' work.

  4. Administration of achievement assessment (post).

  5. File assessment records and general materials.

  6. Assist with selecting and requisitioning needed instructional materials, supplies, and equipment.

  7. Distribute educational materials to students (folders, curriculum, supplies).

  8. Maintain a clean and orderly center.

  9. Handle routine interruptions or disruptive behavior of students.

  10. Attend and participate in faculty meetings as instructed.

  11. Work cooperatively with instructors, administrators, and staff.

  12. Uphold and enforce the rules and regulations of the Board of Education.

  13. Maintain professional competence through participation in staff development activities, in-service education activities, and selected professional growth activities.

  14. Maintain highest level of confidentiality regarding sensitive school, client, and student information.

  15. Assist with keeping current inventory of supplies, instructional materials, and equipment.

  16. Perform other professional tasks and duties as may be assigned.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
