Placement on the Yosemite Community College District salary schedule dependent upon education and experience. 2023-2024 Salary Schedule - $68,264 to $127,430 per year, plus an annual $2,789 stipend for an earned doctorate. New personnel limited to a maximum tenth step initial placement based on previous experience - maximum equals $105,969.

• Categorically funded position. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon funding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling

psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent,

AND

EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall:

(1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly

relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic

disadvantages

OR

(2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling

practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in

a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language,

social or economic disadvantages

AND

In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational

experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

Job Description Summary

GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Services, be responsible for supporting and encouraging the enrollment, retention and academic goal attainment of students handicapped by language, social, economic and educational disadvantages, and facilitating the successful completion of their goals and objectives in college through academic and support counseling, financial aid and other support services. Primary assignment will be working with EOPS/CARE and former Foster Youth, with additional support to CalWORKs students. Duties may include individual student appointments, walk-in assignments, group guidance courses, workshops, evening and weekend assignments and participation in other outreach activities. Participation in department and college-wide committees is expected. Must be able to use available technologies and apply current career theories and methods.

All full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be online, in the evening, and/or on Saturdays. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Conduct individual student counseling appointments, including drop-in meetings and group workshops. Assignment will include some weekend and evening duties.

• Help students understand the increasingly complex process of applying to college and registering for classes.

• Assist students with determining career goals and linking those goals to a corresponding educational objective.

• Advise students with making course selections and help them to create an Educational Plan that utilizes the digital software advantages of Starfish Degree Planner.

• Discuss university transfer options and help students to make positive and realistic transfer decisions.

• Refer students to appropriate student support and educational services on campus.

• Monitor, support, and encourage struggling students during the academic and/or progress probation process as well as dismissal appeal process.

• Serve as liaison with CSU and UC systems, and private and out-of-state institutions, to gather and disseminate ever-changing information to students.

• Teach a wide variety of Guidance or Skills Development classes

• Recognize how to constructively apply referrals to students for ongoing mental health (therapeutic) counseling, instructional supports, and other student services as needed.

• Refer to campus and community partners who provide resources for basic needs; housing, food, and childcare insecure students as needed.

• Help students cope with the stresses and strains of college, and life in general.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS

• Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.

• Dexterity: fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle individual papers, write and take notes.

• Lifting: occasional lifting of papers, files, equipment, and material weighing up to 25 pounds.

• Visual Requirements: close vision sufficient to do close-up work, read files, documents, and computer screens, and the ability to adjust focus frequently.

• Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.

• Emotional/Psychological Factors: ability to make decisions and concentrate; have frequent contact with others, including some public contact; and to meet frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Valid California community college instructor credential in appropriate subject issued prior to July 1, 1990 (per California Education Code 87355); AND

• Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socio-economic, academic, and cultural diversity within student populations, including students with disabilities, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

• Education and/or experience in teaching in Guidance and Skills Development at the community college level.

• Competency in current pedagogies, such as accelerated learning, supplemental instruction, online or hybrid teaching, and other strategies directed at improving student success and student equity.

POPULATION-SPECIFIC DESIRABLE JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Counseling students in all academic and vocational areas; providing virtual counseling and/or group counseling, participation in the matriculation process, including placement and development of student education plans and identifying retention strategies to achieve desired outcome and follow-up; assisting with or completing Dream Resource applications. Develop and maintain relationships with Dream Resource agencies, and other duties as assigned by dean. Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services to community college students from diverse backgrounds regarding degree and career education program planning, university transfer planning, education, career decision, goal clarification and personal life management.

• Advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines and evidence-based teaching practices.

• Informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.

• Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress.

• Maintaining attendance, scholastic, and other records and submitting them according to published policies and deadlines.

• Support students in their development, including academic program, transfer, and career options.

• Participating in department, division, and college-wide meetings and committees on a regular basis.

• Actively participating in the accreditation cycle.

• Collaborating in the development and revision of program review and engaging in program improvement initiatives.

• Participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide, especially in connection to statewide initiatives.

• Engaging in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.

• Maintaining current knowledge in effective teaching/learning strategies for EOPS/CARE and NextUP students.

• Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

• Engaging in the college's participatory governance processes.

• Perform other duties as assigned.
