Open until filled Reports to: Director of Counseling Position Summary: Counselors in secondary education are tasked with helping adolescents navigate the unique educational, social and behavioral obstacles related to attending high school.
Counselors are assigned students and provide holistic and proactive services which contribute to each student’s educational, vocational, spiritual and personal/social development. Duties include but are not limited to: Adhere to and support school policy, guidelines, administrative rules and directives.
Make him/herself available to all students assigned who are seeking guidance and counseling services. Advocate on behalf of the student and/or his/her family. Understand, evaluate, and interpret academic performance data.
Interpret information about students to the students, their parents/guardians, and staff members. Assist students with choices in scheduling of courses to assure the student is on track to graduate. Collaborate with the Director of Counseling when students request a schedule change during the school year.
Assist in conducting career and educational planning activities. Participate in in-service activities promoted by the school. Maintain accurate records and reports on meetings with students/parents and/or teachers.
Collaborate with the Director of Counseling, teachers, and parents in identifying students who are struggling academically and require an intervention plan (Lancer Success Plan) or Academic Probation. Write the Lancer Success Plan and meet with parents to ensure there is a clear understanding of academic expectations and follow up regularly with the student to ensure he/she is making progress. Participate as a member of the Academic Committee when a student is on Academic Probation.
Collaborate with the 504 coordinator when working with students with accommodation plans. Conduct exit interviews with students and parents who are withdrawing. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal for Student Services and Director of Counseling.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of counseling theory and practice Working knowledge of High School counseling procedures Experience with needs of high school age students and their families Engaging interpersonal skills and strong verbal/written skills Innovative, enthusiastic, energetic and flexible Effective working with groups Familiar with computer based transcripts, schedules, etc., internet and software counseling resources Able to organize and sequence activities Collaborative working style and strong work ethic Commitment to professional growth Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Counseling or related field State Level K-12 School Counseling Certification Minimum of two years of successful counseling at the high school level Solid employment history with verifiable references
