Job Description and Duties

This position is located in the city of Albany.

The Orientation Center for the Blind (OCB) program is a 24 hour, 7 days a week residential facility providing independent living skills and pre-vocational training services to adults who are blind/visually impaired.

Under direction of the OCB Assistant Administrator, the OCB Dormitory Counselor is responsible for oversight of daily activities for participants during non-instructional hours providing guidance and counseling support pertaining to adjustment to blindness; assisting with activities of daily living taught in classes that are performed outside of class in participant's non-training hours; insuring participants comply with dormitory rules and regulations; and arranging for medical attention when required. The dormitory counselor communicates participant and facility issues to appropriate OCB staff and completes necessary reports and records. After hours, the dormitory counselor insures the campus is secured and provides staff leadership in case of emergency or crisis, to include first aid intervention and engaging the medical community and/or law enforcement.

Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably including such courses as psychology, physiology, or mental health. (Two years of experience teaching blind adults may be substituted for not more than two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.
