About the School: We are a developmentally-based charter school built by parents and teachers. Being a cooperative school, parent participation is valued and their resources are utilized. It is an atmosphere where respect is threaded into the interactions between students and staff and student-to-student. Social-emotional learning is built into the students' learning and we use the Second Step curriculum to directly teach these concepts. We believe in reaching each child as an individual with unique perspectives, cultures, backgrounds, and learning styles.
About the Learning Environment: We believe that learning is a very individual process. Each of us constructs and revises our understanding of the world every day. The way individuals learn best is dependent on many factors: developmental stage, environment, personality, interests and social style are just some of the things that influence our ability to learn new concepts. Constructivism is the educational philosophy that is the basis for our teaching methodology. The constructivist model relies on research indicating that the deepest understanding of knowledge is created through exploration, reasoning, and discussion. If you reflect for a moment on how you as an adult learn a new concept or skill, you are most likely to find that interaction, questioning, and practice each play a part.
