DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES of the Position Include:

Reporting to the Dean of Counseling/DSPS/Title IX, the General Counselor will assist with the Academic Awareness/CONNECT programs with implementation of its goals and objectives to assist students off of progress and academic probation status. The candidate will provide personal counseling as well as academic advising, career & transfer counseling pertinent to students' goals.

The General Counselor will collaborate with the Dean of Counseling/DSPS/Title IX, Counseling Chair, counseling faculty, instructional faculty, and staff for the success of students within the Academic Awareness/CONNECT programs. Candidate will work closely with the Academic Awareness/CONNECT team to monitor and document student progress, and assist with collecting data for program reporting purposes.

The General Counselor will provide core services including general information to orientation to college programs & services, develop educational plans, and follow-up with students who are on progress and/or academic probation status.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on District and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of a faculty Counselor/Instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

  • Using counseling and academic advising to guide students towards their desired goals (i.e.: transfer or employment or job development).

  • Working with the Academic Awareness/CONNECT team, identify students experiencing progress and/or academic difficulties.

  • Effectively conducting progress and/or academic program workshops.

  • Working in a closely integrated team of Instructors, Counselors, student services special programs and other college services.

  • Working with Academic Awareness/CONNECT team to come up with a global plan to prevent students from being on progress and/or academic probation.

  • Establishing an effective rapport with students.

  • Developing an education plan for students that helps prevent them from probation status.

  • Providing evidence on program success by collecting retention and success data to report to state agencies and campus and

  • District administrators.

  • Working with Academic Awareness/CONNECT program team to come up with a plan for students to prevent and/or remove probation status.

  • Providing high-quality personal counseling to enable students to succeed.

  • Providing transfer and career counseling as appropriate to student educational and career goals.

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with other student service groups in program planning and organizing.

  • Attending all program and division meetings and training sessions.

  • Participating in on-going professional development training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent OR a Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in providing counseling, transfer, and career services to multi-ethnic and underrepresented students.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing academic, personal, career counseling to community college students, especially underprepared students.

  • Ability to provide culturally relevant strategies for developing and teaching personal development, college success and/or career courses to underprepared students.

  • Demonstrated experience in serving students on progress and/or academic probation

  • Demonstrated experience in skills and strategies in effectively serving underrepresented students.

  • Demonstrated experience in working closely and collaboratively with a team.

  • Demonstrated strong communication, written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.

  • Experience working in a student success program.

  • Knowledge of AB 705 policy and guidelines.
