The Counseling Advisor is responsible for advising new and continuing students on program majors and course selections, scholastic problems, academic planning, and career opportunities. The Counseling Advisor's assignment may include specific academic cohorts of students, and the responsibility of apprising students of college policies and procedures. The Counseling Advisor, working within the team, is expected to assist with implementing and conducting advisement and retention programs based on student needs. The Counseling Advisor is responsible for other related duties as assigned by and under direct supervision of the Director, Advisement and Retention.
Provides orientation and advisement for specific student cohorts (related to majors or other groupings) and assists other advisors with other cohorts as needed.
Advises new, continuing, and returning students concerning appropriate course selection and academic planning including basic skills, pre-requisites, course sequencing and academic probation.
Appropriately utilizes data system to assist students with registration (pre-requisite overrides degree evaluations, etc.).
Advises new and returning students on policies and procedures that impact their enrollment status and educational objectives. (i.e., graduation, probation, appeals, amnesty, transfer).
Interprets, analyzes, and instructs students on computer-generated Degree Evaluations.
Advises students on careers and transfer opportunities related to major of study.
Refers students for transfer related advisement
Assists students with grades appeal processes.
Advises students on program selection and assists students who are changing majors.
Is actively engaged in advising at all sessions of registration.
Maintains confidential files of student contacts as needed.
Completes required paperwork and assigned tasks in an accurate and timely fashion.
Maintains communications with students, supervisor(s), support staff, faculty and departments in the College.
Assists with college wide orientation activities.
Serves on various College committees as assigned
Assists students in proper submission and processing of graduation petitions, variances, appeals and other student forms.
Assists with planning, implementing and conducting skills-development workshops deemed necessary for total student enrichment, based on students' needs.
Assists with college activities related to student success, retention and transfer.
Performs other duties, as assigned.
Master's Degree in counseling, student personnel services, student development, or a related area required.
Applicable experience advising students in a community college or similar environment.
Ability to use current applicable hardware and software, including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point
Applicable experience with higher education system administration software. Ellucian Banner preferred.
Ability to work a flexible schedule with variable hours, includes evenings and possible weekends.
Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment
