The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides patient care and specialized treatment by instructing and assisting patients on the prescribed occupational therapy treatment activities related to their medical conditions, limitations, and functional abilities in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. The activities include daily living activities, crafts and physical exercises and related components of treatment.
Prepares patients for activities involved in functional and kinetic treatment programs, and assists the Occupational Therapist in the execution of functional and kinetic treatment programs.
Observes patients and assists the Occupational Therapist in the evaluation of client's daily living skills and capacities to determine the extent of abilities and limitations.
Obtains patient's interests, physical ability and mental alertness.
Assists in the selection of appropriate activities for each patient.
Instructs patients in various arts and crafts based upon their functional ability on a maintenance or supportive basis.
Instructs patients in the activities of daily living, including dressing, grooming, bathing, self-feeding, to maintain functional abilities.
Records notes on each patient's progress in occupational therapy activities.
Prepares work materials, equipment and crafts, monitors and maintains inventory.
Assists in instructing the patient and patient's family in home programs as well as care and use of adaptive equipment.
Assists with the fabrication of splints and other adaptive equipment fitted clinical staff
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
Experience: Previous experience as a certified occupational therapy assistant preferred
Education: A high school diploma or equivalency required
Licenses / Certifications: License and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as an Occupational Therapy Assistant required.
Other: The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
