The Marymount Manhattan College seeks a full-time, highly organized, and creative Costume Supervisor/Designer to manage all costume needs for the Department of Dance. The Dance Department offers BA/BFA degrees in Dance, enrolls 240 majors, and supports 3- 4 productions per semester. Costuming for dance involves utilizing the onsite collection and selective new builds depending on budget availability and artistic needs. This position requires flexibility to cover scheduled evenings and weekends. The Costume Supervisor/Designer is responsible for managing a team of contractors each semester, which depending on needs can include stitchers, designers, and a wardrobe manager.

Applicants should have professional design credits, be skilled with stretch fabric construction techniques, and be knowledgeable about the costume demands of dance productions. The Costume Supervisor/Designer works in a space utilized for design, construction, and teaching that is shared equally with the Theatre department.

Salary: $62,400.00

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide costume support, which may include alterations, design, or redesign for student and guest choreographers for studio productions.

  • Collaborate with commissioned choreographers to design and execute two to four choreographic pieces for the productions in the Theresa Lang Theatre, per semester.

  • Liaise with faculty and staff within the VPA (Visual Performing Arts) division Costume Shop, as well as the Technical Director for Dance, and the VPA Operations Director.

  • Develop collaborative relationships with the VPA Division's Theater Department Design faculty and staff.

  • With the Costume Shop Supervisor, assist and support professional (contracted) dance costume designers in all aspects of pre-production needs i.e., scheduling of fittings, providing access to costume inventory, and providing measurements.

  • Schedule and supervise wardrobe managers, stitchers, and guest designers for the Dance Department's Studio and Mainstage productions.

  • Maintain costume stock to be used/reused for productions with the Costume Shop Supervisor, and update inventory throughout the year.

  • Maintain measurements for all dance majors.

  • Manage budgetary needs and purchasing for dance productions throughout each semester.

  • Submit all financial receipts for payment in a timely manner.

  • Support/mentor-student costume designers for dance productions in collaboration with Costume faculty and staff.

  • Attend all technical/dress rehearsals.

  • Attend Dance Department Meetings as needed and all Dance Production Meetings.

This position may include the opportunity to teach Design for Dance, and/or supervise costume design major's projects (for additional compensation).

Educational Requirements:

Candidates should hold a bachelor's degree in costume, dance, or a related field, and have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in Dance and/or Theater settings. This is a 12-month full-time salaried position with benefits. The position involves a regular work schedule but requires evening and weekend availability based on the needs of production during the academic year.

  • Experience designing, fitting, and building costumes for dance (skills in pattern-making, draping, and tailoring desired)

  • High-level stitching and building and ability to effectively design multiple pieces at once.

  • Experience working with/managing a team

  • Experience working with students in an educational environment

  • Ability to use online organization systems

  • Experience creating effective costume organizational paperwork

  • Willing to learn current storage and organization systems

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 30 lbs, move garment racks to different locations in the building.
