Definition of Class

This position manages the daily operations of the costume shop. The incumbent generates costume fitting schedules, creates garment patterns and constructions, organizes dress rehearsals, purchases costume shop materials and provides proper maintenance of all shop equipment.

The Department of Theatre & Film at The University of Mississippi seeks applications for a Costume Shop Manager to begin on, or around, August 1, 2024 (start date flexible). Candidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of costume techniques, including specialized sewing techniques, fabric manipulation, craftwork, and patterning. Expertise in the construction and alteration of theatre costumes and related accessories as well as project management is expected. An understanding of historical costume periods; the ability to utilize and interpret costume drawings and designs for construction purposes; to maintain schedules, deadlines, and stock; to lead and train students in costume production and supervise wardrobe crews is expected. Experience in dance and film costuming is a plus. Successful candidates will possess strong/effective mentoring, organizational, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.

The department currently enrolls 120 majors with 21 full time faculty, 11 full time staff members, and offers a BA in Theatre Arts, BFA in Theatre Arts emphases in Acting for Stage & Screen and Design & Theatre Production, and a BFA in Film Production. Examples of Work Performed

  • Prepares and maintains fiscal documents for the Costume Shop.

  • Establishes estimated budgets of costumes needed for productions.

  • Monitors and reconciles costume shop expenditures.

  • Generates costume fitting schedules and supervises garment alterations.

  • Facilitates design and garment creation for each production.

  • Collaborates with designers to create cost effective costumes.

  • Oversees the completion of costumes created for the stage.

  • Expedites garment completion and production within scheduled deadlines.

  • Organizes dress rehearsals.

  • Acts as a liaison with the costume crew to ensure timely delivery of costume components from the shop to dress rehearsals.

  • Trains and guides production crews.

  • Purchases and manages costume shop supplies, fabrics, and materials.

  • Provides maintenance for production equipment, including repairs and replacement.

  • Directs the utilization of safe working practices in all areas of the costume shop and theatre.

  • Provides guidance, supervision, and feedback to support staff.

  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the daily operations of the costume shop.

  • Oversees shop equipment, including repairs, maintenance, and replacement.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

AND

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties.
