Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse Trainee. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility. The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.

Essential Function 1

Performs on-the-job training in a variety of nursing care functions, such as administering medications, monitoring vital signs and examining individuals in custody utilizing nursing assessment skills and techniques.

1.Provides personal patient care and medical/nursing treatments to individuals in custody as prescribed.

2.Performs nurse sick call.

3.Administers medication.

4.Assists physician on call lines.

5.Responds to doctor's call to assist in the examining room with individuals in custody, takes patient's vital signs, and completes medical forms using physician notes.

6.Collaborates with other medical personnel to plan and implement comprehensive patient care programs.

7.Performs lab draws.

8.Responds to medical emergencies.

Essential Function 2

Receives formal training on how to assess patient progress.

1.Completes admission interviews to assist in determining:

• Patient's medical history.

• Physical/mental health status.

• Placement within the facility.

2.Prepares nursing records and completes initial assignment sheets in accordance with the facility's standards, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and security guidelines.

3.Coordinates patients' recent medical records with histories.

4.Records physician's orders, charts medications, records patient's reactions and behavior after receiving medication and/or medical treatment.

5.Documents all nursing care provided.

Essential Function 3

Receives hands-on training in proper procedures to set up, operate and monitor special equipment, such as respirators, and suction devices, AED, oxygen.

Essential Function 4

Receives extensive on-the-job training in:

1.Maintaining security of medical equipment and supplies.

2.Conducting surveillance of medical unit surroundings and individuals in custody for possession of contraband and illegal drugs.

3.Preparing reports on infractions of the facility's security rules and regulations.

4.Receives comprehensive training on procedures used to inspect food services areas and individual in custody housing units for safety and sanitation, conducts Restrictive Housing evaluations, and documents completion and findings of inspections and evaluations.

Essential Function 5

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications 1

Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Minimum Qualifications 2

Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications 1

Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a correctional setting.

Preferred Qualifications 2

Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in mental health.

Preferred Qualifications 3

Prefers at least one (1) year of experience problem solving in a nursing position.

Preferred Qualifications 4

Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications 5

Prefers at least one (1) year of working experience in a leadership role.

Employment Condition 1

Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

Employment Condition 2

Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.

Employment Condition 3

Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
