Salary: $4,692 to $5,712 per month (SR-22, Step C to H).

Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

This class reflects the working supervisor over a small staff of lower level Corrections Education Specialist positions.

These positions are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, coordinating, and evaluating the activities of an education program of moderate size and scope in a correctional facility in addition to performing educational case management services for inmates comparable to the journey level class, Corrections Education Specialist III; and performing other related duties as assigned.

The Corrections Specialist III is responsible for independently identifying inmates' educational needs through academic and/or vocational testing and assessment; developing individualized educational plans; coordinating educational activities; monitoring, evaluating and documenting inmates' progress; and modifying their educational plans as necessary.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Basic Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

General Experience: One and one-half years* of progressively responsible professional teaching experience which involved developing educational lesson plans and providing instruction to students; assessing students' progress and modifying educational plans to address level of progress. Such experience MUST have involved and demonstrated knowledge of the application of principles and practices of education and learning, and instructional methods and materials.

Specialized Experience: ONE year* of progressively responsible professional teaching experience as described above, in a corrections education program which provided knowledge of the legislative mandates and statutes relating to the educational requirements of inmates as well as the program activities, goals and objectives, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures of a corrections education program. The work must also have provided knowledge of related programs and activities in educational institutions, community resources and agencies, and federal and State agencies involved with educational issues.

  • One year of General or Specialized Experience is defined as a school year approximately 180 "teacher duty" days or approximately 38 weeks per year.

Supervisory Aptitude: Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted. This requirement will be considered to have been met when there is strong affirmative evidence of the necessary supervisory abilities and/or potential.

Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, will apply.

Other Requirements: All applicants who are conditionally offered employment or conditionally approved for movement into this position shall be subject to drug screening, as required by Federal, State or local laws, or departmental policy; and will be subject to an intensive background check. (2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.

(3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.

(4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment."

Course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses such as community recreation, physical fitness, abnormal psychology, counseling, behavior management, criminal justice, human personality and behavior.</p><p>General Experience: Six months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an organized athletic/recreation program for groups of people, which included professional level experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and carrying out of such athletic/recreation programs.</p><p>Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible professional work experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and conducting recreation programs and/or activities in a correctional setting, to stimulate and sustain the interest of the participants and contribute to their physical, creative, social and cultural development and overall well-being.</p><p>Driver's License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
