Job Duties
This position is with the Department of Corrections' Corrections Construction Unit and the main administrative office is based in Powhatan, Virginia.
Position actively participate in the productive, effective and cost efficient delivery of programs and services which support and enhance field operations to achieve the goals, mission and vision of the Department.
Position serves as a Senior Construction Estimator and Project Manager for the Corrections
Construction Unit. Construction Cost Estimators collect and analyze data for review and interpretation of professionally prepared plans, specifications and contract documents and prepare highly detailed materials and labor takeoff providing cost estimates of construction in multiple construction trades disciplines. As a part of the project management team, the estimator assists in preparation of project work scopes and material bid packages and work in progress site visit review.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License.
Experience performing commercial construction project estimation. Skill in reading and interpreting commercial construction drawings and specifications as prepared by a Professional Architect or Engineering firm in all CSI divisions, strong familiarity with drafting standards and symbols. Skills in preparation of specification materials requisitions.
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Programs. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Ability to effectively communicate with others both verbally and in writing. Ability to travel alone to job sites to gather information on materials needed, labor requirements, and other information as required.
Additional Considerations
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering or other construction related higher education courses or combination of education and related work experience. Certifications in one or more of the following: VCCO, *Virginia Construction Contracting Officer, CPE, *Certified Professional Estimator, CCM *Certified Construction Manager, Official Land Disturber Certification.
Significant knowledge of commercial building construction methodologies, techniques, materials, environmental and project management principles in multiple construction trades disciplines/specialties. Knowledge of Construction Specification Institutes, (CSI) Master Format Divisions.
Knowledge of the contents of the adopted Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code as it relates to commercial construction. Knowledge in procedures of preparation of construction materials specification and labor costing documents. Ability to prepare single line commercial construction drawings, utilizing hand drawings or computer assisted drafting (CAD).
