This Correctional Training Instructor position of the Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) Central Region Training Center located in Apex, North Carolina. The position supports BCO and In-Service teams when required. This position will work out of various satellite training locations statewide (Salemburg and or Samarcand). This position reports to a Correction Training Coordinator I and is subject to review and evaluation through reports, student feedback and stakeholders.

Certification in Firearms and or CRDT specialty certification with the condition of attaining the remaining specialty within 6 months of the start date.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordination, planning, and implementation of courses of instruction for Basic Certified Mandated Training and/or Certified Instructor level training

  • Presenting blocks of instruction for Basic Probation (BCO) / Parole Officer (PPO) Mandated Training (273) hours and Certified Instructor level training in OSDT

  • Conducting basic training, writing lesson plans and objectives, reviewing existing lesson plans, assisting other trainers and other instructors, and writing evaluation reports

  • Delivering instruction independently and instructing as a member of an instructional team in accordance with approved training materials and methodology

  • Researching materials for course development, developing courses strategies and objectives, modifying course content, and participating in evaluation of courses

Weekend hours, extended hours, overnight travel, extended travel and overnight stays at remote locations for extended periods of up to eight weeks are required.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Possession of current General Instructor Certification

  • Demonstrated knowledge of procedures, practices and operation of North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections

Management Preferences:

  • Besides General Instructor Certification, Instructor certification in two or more of the following Specialties: Corrections Specialized Firearms, Controls, Restraints, Defensive Techniques (CRDT), Wellness, CPR (American Heart or Red Cross), First Aid, Expandable Baton or Fitness is desirable

  • Proficient in crafting and executing PowerPoint presentations, as well as creating Word documents

Bachelor's degree and two years of directly related instruction and training experience in the subject matter specialty

Graduation from high school and five years of experience (OR) an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have current required certification with the ability to maintain any and all certifications required by OSDT, NCDPS, and by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

The Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) provides training for employees across the Department of Adult Corrections. OSDT has a staff of 91 instructors and support personnel who deliver basic training to correction and probation officers. The office also leads firearms training, leadership education programs, general instructor training, and other specialized classes and manages the delivery of the annual in-service training for more than 16,000 certified employees.
