The Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) provides training for employees across the Department of Adult Corrections. The Office of Staff Development and Training has a staff of 91 instructors and support personnel who deliver basic training to correction and probation officers. The office also leads firearms training, leadership education programs, general instructor training, and other specialized classes and manages the delivery of the annual in-service training for more than 16,000 certified employees.

The position is responsible for overseeing blocks of instruction for the In-Service Training and Certified Instructor level training in the Staff Development and Training section of the Department of Adult Corrections. Employees in this position are responsible for overseeing training, development, coordination, delivery, instruction, and facilitation of In-Service training for NCDAC/OSDT as necessary to meet the current and evolving needs of the agency. This position is responsible for curriculum planning processes and for managing the design, development, assessment, and evaluation of In-Service training in accordance with standards established by law, administrative code, policy, and approved training methodologies. The position is reviewed and evaluated through observation, reports, feedback, and stakeholders. Weekend hours, extended hours, overnight travel, extended travel, and overnight stays at remote locations for extended periods of up to six weeks are required. Possession of current General Instructor Certification, Corrections Specialized Firearms Instructor Certification, Controls, Restraints and Defensive Techniques (CRDT) Instructor Certification and the ability to obtain other certifications as required by management to meet the needs of the agency.

This position is assigned to the OSDT Samarcand Training Academy located in Jackson Springs North Carolina in Moore County and is responsible for the coordination, planning, and implementation of courses of instruction for DAC/DOP In-Service Training and/or Certified Instructor level training and reports to the OSDT In-Service Training Coordinator II.

About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC)

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Thorough knowledge about North Carolina Adult Corrections Policies and Procedures.

  • Proven experience coordinating and providing instruction for multi-course programs at multiple sites and facilitate corrections training for a state correctional agency.

  • Proven experience researching and developing publication quality training materials for correction personnel.

  • Intermediate knowledge in using LMS and or equivalent systems and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

Management Preferences:

  •  Prefers a four-year degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services or related field

  • Coordinator experience for a period of at least six months (classes/trainees)

  • Management/supervisory experience for at least 1 year.

  • Prefers current General Instructor Certification and Instructor certification in the following specialties: Corrections Specialized Firearms Instructor and CRDT.
