Description of Duties/Essential Functions Benefits Supplemental Questions

Under general supervision of the Shift Supervisor; instructs and supervises Correctional Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Officer Trainees; enforces and maintains discipline, safety, security, maintenance, sanitary and custodial measures for the control of inmates; monitors compliance with Departmental Rules, Administrative Directives and institutional Policies.

Minimum Requirements:
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school and completion of an approved Correctional Officer Training Program; requires two years experience as a correctional Officer in a penal or security institution. Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this class; requires thorough knowledge of institutional rules, regulations and requirements for the control of inmates; requires working knowledge of individual and group attitude and behavior of residents in the penal or correctional institutions; requires working knowledge of methods and techniques used in discipline of employees and persons in correctional institutions; requires relationships with public officials, investigatory and law enforcement agencies; requires ability to supervise correctional officers and make independent decisions; requires ability to prepare reports of unusual happenings, accidents, or violations of rules; requires ability to train and supervise employees or inmates; requires ability to understudy and assume duties of immediate supervisor in the event of vacation, sick leave or emergency; requires the ability to think clearly and exercises forceful initiative in emergency situations; requires ability to enforce disciplinary, safety, security and custodial measures; requires ability to understand the use firearms; requires a valid drivers license.

Explains eligibility criteria and requirements for public assistance programs. Collects customer data and determines eligibility. Discusses the customer's goals and participation levels. Assesses the customer's skills and evaluates their ability to obtain and retain employment; makes appropriate referrals to other DHS programs, state services or local private services to verify customer receives available benefits. Completes case documentation, responds to electronic correspondence and makes entries into automated computer systems. Performs functions outlined below or a portion thereof (e.g. Intake) as part of an assigned caseload or on a rotational basis. Communicates with customers and other DHS staff in both verbal and written form. Minimum Requirements: Requires a bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology/anthropology, social welfare or a closely related field. Requires one year of professional casework or crisis intervention experience in a social service agency OR successful completion of an agency-sponsored training program.
